After tightening headset steering is stiff...why?

Common sense would say i have tightened it so much im forcing the bearings together too much on the headset…

That would be my guess!

You should be able to ride no handed with a correctly adjusted headset.

To quote RBR:
“My motto with headsets;tighter is righter. You’ve heard of indexed shifting? I had indexed steering!”

thanks for that…im gonna loosen up and take it all off to see if i see signs of rub on the metal…

What type of headset? Some integrated headsets need additional spacers BENEATH the cover cap, otherwise the cap rides against the top tube creating additional friction i.e. tightness. Loosening things will make it better, but also sloppy. If you have an integrated headset, you may want to add 1-3mm of wafer thin spacers under the cap so that your loading the bearings, and not the cap against the head tube. Hope I’ve been clear.

I know what you mean yes…i remember a headset i had in the past with a very thin spacer…it makes sense…thanks man
