I was reading an article on the latest Triathlete, and wanted to know what you guys do for a recovery after a race? In most terms it is almost impossible to follow the guidelines. For road races I carry a recovery drink but in triathlons it is impossible to access to transition right after you finish. And most of the times they food they serve do not fall into “high quality protein” category as described.
I am not talking about “healthy” food options after the race it is more like food that helps you to recover. My best solution was to carry Endurox powder in a shaker and mix it with cold water after about an hour I finish.
From what I see people are really paying attention to recovery after a hard workout but after a hard race most people including me (ate a whole peperoni pizza!) do not care that much after a hard race specially races like HIMs.
beer
.
You could always have family/friend hold a post-race drink for you…that is what i do. I have my girlfriend hold two recovery drinks for me…i just mix with water.
Chocolate milk.
small cooler/cold bag in car (or transition bag if parking is far away):
chocolate milk
PB and J
extra gatorage or whatever
Try to eat pasta w/ chicken or fish for dinner. Reasonable amount of ice cream or whatever for dessert, but if you eat right, you won’t piledrive the whole carton of ice cream (and man, have I been there…)

See thats the problem. most of the times I am alone and have to wait for Transition to open.

Yes, thats what i do stash in the transition bag or car but it takes a lot of time to access those areas after the race. How late is too late? In other words, will it still help me to recover waiting that much or should I try to use whats available at the finishline which is usually a stale bagel, gatorade and some fruit.
With all the sponsorships and ads you think they could serve recovery drinks at the finish as an alternative option…
