AeT Training question

I’ve been using the Aet training principles as in Going Long and have seen some good results. I’ve just enter IM Lanzarote 2005, where there are some pretty serious climbs and there’s that chance of some serious wind.

My question is this…

Endurance is still my limiter.

Should I carry on doing my Saturday long bike in the steady zone on flat to rolling terrain, which for me is 130-135bpm. Or should I be doing my long rides in the hills?

I know that @ Lanzarote, with the wind and the hills i’ll probably go near 7hrs for the bike as opposed to the normal 6hrs. I was planning on building up to doing a couple of long easy/steady (125-135bpm) rides on the flat to rolling of 7hrs. Should I do this and have my Wed strength bike increase to 3hrs max with lots of hills.

In case your curious, here’s the bike profile for Lanzarote…

Race course specificity is a key to success. That does not mean that you should concenttrate soley on long hilly rides, though. If endurance is your limiter than I think you should really focus on building a huge aerobic engine by training in your proper zone. For the most part I do not think that the profile of your long training ride matters so much as staying in your zones. As your event comes closer, you need to shift your training route to reflect your racing route.

Are you training with power? Power zones on the flats are approcached differently than power zones in the hills.
