I am having problems with the water splashing all over from my bottle. Yep, I have that meshy yellow thing in there… Is thee a trick? A sponge?
every race I have more Gatorade on me than sweat. Really gross. At a race earlier this year I saw another guy with a perfectly sized water bottle cap that, when inverted, fit perfectly in the hole. He just removed it and used his teeth to hold it when filling up on the fly. I’m gonna look for the perfect sized cap for myself
I have one of the Profile ones. It’s never been a problem.
I started to use Saran Wrap and a rubber band or 2. Since I’m only doing short races I don’t need the quick refill option - YMMV on that one…
The bottle I got from Endursport came with a cap.
FYI, it also came with a sponge.
have you ever tried a JetStream? it comes with a nice sponge instead of the yellow thing that comes with the Profile bottle. never had problems with liquid splashing out of it and it fills without a problem.
i second that dc. i have the jetstream as well and have never had a problem.
No I haven’t but I am trying to figure something out quick, for my 1/2IM sunday…
Here’s a quick, cheap fix. Go to the “Dollar Store” or whatever version you have nearby and by a package of those nylon shower poofs. The kind you use to scrub up with in the shower. They cost like a few bucks for a three pack and are denser that the yellow mesh that came with the bottle originally.
I made this change before my last race and no more splashing Cytomax all over on every bump in the road.
Simple but effective!!

I went to the local bike shop and bought the replacement sponge for a Jetstream and use it in my Profile bottle. Works great.
Aloha,

I did the same thing (Jetstream sponge in profile bottle). Works perfectly.
that’s what I do as well, but only because I lost the yellow thing.
The trick is to roll it up inside itself over and over like a pair of socks. Do that and it works fine. It is a lot easier to clean than the sponge. I only use the front bottle for water for that reason. Food goes in the bottles.
no problems with splashing here and i am on my second Profile bottle/yellow thingy combo. did you unravel the yellow thingy sufficiently and ball it up?
no… that’s what I am trying to figure out… is what to do with the yellow meshy thing… and geez I am not even a newbie… embarassing!! Just tired of being slpashed with water and I want gatorade in there this week-end!! So unravel it and ball it up?
Even if the yellow mesh is in correctly it will still splash a bit, I would suggest a sponge (virtually no splash and still easy to fill), and nothing but water in it. If you must carry gatorade, put it in a separate standard waterbottle. I had a mix in my front profile bottle once and it took two hours after the race to clean up all of the small sticky spots all over the bike, and I am still finding them in really small strange places. One small splash going 40 down a hill will end up everywhere, including racers behind you, and they will not like your sticky gatorade on them. Second if you can handle gatorade during a race (it turns into a ball of junk in my throat) you will have to wash it down with some water from a second bottle anyways.
yeah, make sure you have the yellow thingy rolled up correctly, if you just fold it or cram it in there it doesn’t work at all
.
I would be a bit leery of a sponge B-cause the thought of bacteria living in there and not wanting to come out in the wash would freak me out too much. Maybe you are just filling the bottle too much. try not filling it all the way and leave a portion of the balled-up-yellow-thingymajig above the top of the bottle.
If you dry the sponge or foam out thoroughly and soon after use (like the same day) bacteria will not be an issue (I work in a lab doing water quality analysis everyday). The other alternative is buy a new one for each race, what is a few extra bucks a couple of times a year.
I have a jetstream with a sponge and the excelerade still splashes out with every bump in the road. I solved it by accident during a race when i had a gu and stuffed the empty wrapper into the bottle. No more splashing. Now I just have a gu or carboom or whatever’s in the goody bag before the race, fill up the bottle, put the wrapper over the sponge…voila!
Marisol, I lay it lengthwise, fold it in half, and roll it up> I make sure part is sticking out of the top and I’ve never had any problems.
