Hey peeps, I have some Neuvation R28 SL3’s on my Soloist and I was wondering if a wheelcover in the rear would be worth it? Is it going to fly off or anything? Will it save some time? Any other thoughts? For $60 is seems hard to go wrong…
Another question is how hard are they to cut yourself vs. Rich at WheelBuilder.com?
Does one wheel work better with a wheel cover than another?
Is there an inexpensive rim fits the best? I need a reliable training wheel built for my PowerTap hub and want to put a wheel cover on it to race. Suggestions?
It is thin plastic so cutting it won’t be to hard but cutting a clean circle, centered, and mated to the rim might be. It does not cost much to have wheelbuilder cut it.
I have heard that super deep wheel don’t work as well but I have no idea, I think Jonnyo used one on a zipp 606 at IM canada and he went pretty fast. Why not get a mavic Open pro or a xcp33 built up with your PT and get the wheel cover and a nice front wheel.
You tell Rich what type of wheel you have and he will see if he has a “template” for it. If he doesn’t, you might have to send in the wheel or give him the model so he can go get the measurements.
I’ve been to the shop and he has this “cutter” which is like one of those math instruments that make circles, so he’s going to get a “perfect” cut.
I guess if you buy a generic one from all3sports or something, you can draw out a circle and try to use a razor or sharp scissor to get it close.
Here’s some pics close up.

That doesn’t look half bad…In fact it looks pretty damn clean.
So how about performace? Anyone have any sites with reviews? Since the air is so dirty by the time it reaches your rear wheel, is this something that actually helps, or should I just spend a bit more and get an aero helmet?
Check the below thread. It has a couple of really sweet pics (look at dimpled wheel by psycholist)** **and has some technical info on the cover.

In my experience (I own both a Wheelbuilder cover and a LG Chrono helmet), the cover makes a more noticeable difference.

it s the opposite, the deeper the rim (exemple a 808) the better the cover and rim junction will be and the faster. I wasnt on a budget for ironman canada. I decided to ride a 808 with a cover on it because it s simply faster than a normal zipp disc.(not talking about the new zipp sub9…more testing is needed) Yes… faster… that is the main reason i was using the cover and will still be using it this year.
i heard the 404 with cover does very well also… but better/faster with a 808.
so…yes… the cover is a nice and cheap option to have a race wheel but depending of your wheel and rim shape…results will varie…
Just remember to put some tape over the hole you make for the air thingy on race day.
If the 808 w/ cover is faster than the 404 w/ cover does it stand to reason that the 1080 w/ cover will trump all? Gracias.
go to www.biketechreview.com
they take the CH aero cover and a disk wheel into the windtunnel and tell you the difference in perfomance. Good information and worth the price of admission.
most likely no… the 1080 doesnt have the same shape as a 808… the buldge is almost non existant… but that would need to be tested of course…
but so far… zipp as gone with a shape that closely replicate the 808+cover for there 2008 disc that will be available soon…
as for biketechreview… i never look at the results but i dont think they tested the cover with a 808… i think they use a low profile rim and that wont be as good…
Silly question… Are my priorities correct? I’m on a tight budget, but landed a Trek E9 for cheap last season. I have the stock Bontrager Race X Lite wheels on her. Would it be silly to get a wheel cover and not yet own an aero helmet? (I enjoy the wind in my hair) Would it be silly to have a rear cover and still have the stock wheel up front? I really don’t mind being silly, so much as stupid. Opinions?
Is the 2008 bulge product the sub 9 disk? I have read a couple of opinions that the sub 9 is pretty similar to having an 808 with a wheelcover. However, I would think that the 808 w/ wheelcover would be a more cost effective and flexible option, i.e. on windy days. Gracias.
yep… i think they are very similar but rappstar could comment a bit more on that!
as for your last sentence… On windy day… you will stick with the disc… the biggest gain come from these windy day. On a perfectly calm day… the 808 could theoricly be faster than a disc…
i like to have the 808 because of hawaii… where i m not allowed to use a disc… but even with the terrible wind of hawaii… a disc would not be a problem
so which wheel cover is the goods to go with my 808 rear??
i only know one… from wheelbuilder.com i dont know if there is any other… everyone seems to be using the same one.
