Aero Hydration set up for road bike

I have a steel framed allez with a small round tubed frame. For my long rides and races, I usually just stick a regular old round bottle on the down and seat tube and go. I’m wondering how much time I’m losing, or if it’s even worth worrying about on this bike, and given my weak bike fitness(currently >3:00 for a 70.3 bike split).

Thanks,

If I recall correctly, there is some evidence that for classic steel tubed bikes, a water bottle on the bike (forget if it was a downtube or seattube bottle) can actually reduce drag.

yep, seat tube
.

Awesome, that’s easy enough!

I’ll leave my ST bottle and ditch the downtube, since I assume it’s costing me??

I’m going to disagree, John Cobb published this via ST in 2003 which I guess would apply to a road bike too, 1 bottle on down tube had the least drag:

On an aero frame, yes. On a round tube road bike the seat tube is the better position.

It’s not peer reviewed but I didn’t want to keep digging.

I remember seeing that article before although I forgot the outcome. Might not be peer reviewed, but I’m not going to argue with a bunch of MIT guys and a wind tunnel.
