What are your thoughts for an aero helmet for your average age grouper? I tend to be in the top 3 bike splits for my age… I’ve got the disk, aero frame and have worked the engine pretty hard this off season. Should I add the aero helmet or would I look like a complete dork at my local tri?
I think if you wear one of those helmets you had better win your age group or else. I do think that they are a good form of birth control however.
Plug the holes on your regular helmet and it’ll be just as aero and save that five seconds or so. I’ve used that clear winter window insulation stuff that you blow dry on. Nobody even notices so there is no geek factor. Of course you don’t want to do it on hot days.
The geek factor is huge! That said I just got 1st in my age group at a sprint du over here on Long Island with the LG Prologue. It does help and it puts the pressure on. You better be fast or you’ll look like an idiot! But what’s the difference; I’ve got a disc, Zipp front, aero fork, aero frame, crabonX, skin suit, I might as well have the helmet! Once you have all this aero stuff, you can really feel the difference. Every little bit helps a little bit and you can really fly. One more thing that no one has ever mentioned; with all this aero crap the wind doesn’t affect you as much. Others commented on how windy it was but I hardly noticed. If you want the helmet, get it, ride hard and don’t worry about the geek factor.
I would have worn my yesterday if I could have found it.
He is not, you’re just jealous.

I’ve seen photos of that stuff. What’s it called?
Of course, I’m so slow on the bike, that I shouldn’t worry about that.
Wear the helmet. I do despite the fact I haven’t won anything in years.
One must remember when deciding whether to wear an aero helmet or not, that there are two reasons we want to go fast.
-
we want to go as fast as we can so we can be as fast as possible.
-
We want to go as fast as we can so we can be faster than all others in the race (overall or agegroup)
I have no problem with anyone wearing a pointy hat. If you’re 4th overall and going for 3rd and some cash, wear the pointy hat. If you’re a 55 year old grandmother of 3 trying to get a Kona slot, wear the pointy hat. If you’re doing a sprint distance race on a bar bet, wear a K-Mart skid lid, NOT a pointy hat. ![]()
Why??? why do you need to be fast to ride a cool bike, wear the helmet you want, and all the other things so many on this forum talk about??? Who makes this stuff up ???
And if your from canada does none of this nonsence apply? Since all canadians are dorks anywhy???
You run the risk of looking like a dork; right up to the point you step up to the podium. If you got the chops off-the-bike to pull it off; if you think the slight advantage is all that’s holding you back, give it a shot. You will either succeed wonderfully or fail miserably, but you’ll know for sure, one way or the other.
Personally, I wouldn’t.
“Should I add the aero helmet or would I look like a complete dork at my local tri?” Just one more thing; you’ll probably look like a complete dork anyway. With the helmet you’ll like like a slightly faster dork!
"I’ve seen photos of that stuff. What’s it called? "
Can’t actually remember but if you’re in a northern climate you can pick it up at any hardware store.
