Aero Helmets (15)

I am looking for opinions on aero helmets. I am between three models (although I prefer two out of the three slightly more).

Giro Advantage2 vs. Spiuk Kronos vs. Louis Garneau Rocket

I don’t like the look of the LG helmet as much as the other two, but I’m seeking opinions on the overall performance and benefit from each and any other relevant positive/negative characteristics. Thank you

good luck with the Giro
.

The spiuk is comfy. (= Unless your head is too big…

I am aware that the Giro is not available in the US at this time, but if that would be the best helmet to get I would wait until its release (although I do want an aero helmet as soon as possible, for upcoming races).

I’ve used Spiuk Kronos for the first time few days ago in NYC Triathlon. Awesome helmet - light, looks nice, very aero, feels cool, fits me perfect. It definitely helped me with the best bike split and victory in my AG…

i’m in the same dilemia as you; actually tried on an "08 Rocket today, has larger holes with deeper air grooves from front to back, only change from this year. i’m hoping the Giro not just a dream…

I just got a LG Rocket and although it looks dorky from the front, it is surprisingly comfortable. Super light and way more comfortable than any of my road helmets, which I wasn’t expecting. Not hot at all either. I don’t even feel like I’m wearing a helmet with it on! Even the straps are simple to adjust, even on the fly. Don’t know about the other helmets, although the LG looks more aero to me when I see the various helmets on other riders.

I know the Giro has been delayed several times, but check this out: http://www.all3sports.com/product_info.php?pName=giro-advantage-2-2008

They allegedly have some on the way??? Guess I’d believe it when I see it. BTW, the Spiuk is one of the most comfortable helmets I’ve ever tried on. That said, I went with a Rudy Syton because my wife said I looked less dorky in it, and felt it was a bit cooler without ear covers.

Is an aero helmet a real advantage for an average AG? I would think that, for someone like me who averages 18-19 on a good day, that it wouldn’t have much benefit. Add in the fact that when you look down you are creating a wall that takes away a lot of your aero advantage and it doesn’t seem worth it. Anyone have an opinion?

I seem to recall the consensus for aero wheels is that the slower you are, the greater the advantage they become. I would assume an aero helmet would follow the same rule. I know I feel faster in mine:)

Actually you get more of an advantage because you are on the course longer then someone biking at 25mph.

What is up with “wait till the advantage 2 comes out its the best aero helmet” What are you guys on seriously. Do you have a secret wind tunnel test that shows it will blow away the other helmets or once. I’ve never seen people so flippin in love with something that isn’t even availabe yet and doesn’t have any wind tunnel results out.

Not exactly that it becomes a greater advantage. Percentage wise, you’d save a larger % of your time if you were faster and aero, than if you were slow and aero. However, you’d save more time overall if you were slower cos you were out longer.

Consider this: an aero helmet could potentially save you 2-4 times more in terms of aerodynamics than a set of race wheels, for less than1/4 the cost… If you’re using race wheels, but not an aero helmet, you’re not putting your $$ in the right place.

Is the spiuk that comfortable? No shops around here carry it and although my lg rocket is a good helmet i think it leaves a little to be desired and i cracked the shell putting it on at a race a few weeks ago.(held ear parts out a little wide so sunglasses didnt get knocked off) For the spiuk owners, how is the ventilation? If thats not bad im thinking ill have to pick one up.

Yes, I thought the fit was at least as good as or better than any road helmet I’ve tried. Very comfortable and secure. Nice strap and fit system.

Is there a similar advantage with an aero helmet on a traditional road bike without aero bars?

Only advice I can give you is, I switched from Rudy Syton open to LG Rocket and Rocket seems more comfortable and stable. also suprisingly enough even more vented due to in and out air holes. Spiuk didn’t fit me and the ear flaps were uncomfortable.

We’ve looked at and worn each of these helmets- The Giro Advantage (we have a sales sample), The Louis Garneau Rocket and Crono and the Spiuk Crono. We’ve also used the Limar TT aero helmet.

In our opinion (John, Sarah and I who work here who have worn them and raced in some of them) the Spiuk is the nicest. I think it may be the most aero too- but that is a guess. The reason I suggest that is because the underside of the fairing is closed on the Spiuk. That might be better from an aerodynamic perspective. Also, the Spiuk is light (although we didn’t weigh them and weights likely wouldn’t be too comparable since one of the above helmets I metioned was only tested in a size small) and very comfortable.

As viewed from the front the Spiuk is a little less bulbous than the LG Rocket.

I’m wearing the Spiuk helmet and I do sell all of them (except the Giro which we have had on order since September but, like everyone in the U.S., we haven’t received any other than the sample we have that Sarah is using).

Tom

In your opinion, which of those helmets mentioned, do you think would offer the most ventilation? I know aero and cool are mutually exclusive, but I have a hot head!

Thanks

edit: Oh yea, are any of those more suitable for a big noggin?
