Color of a helmet really doesn’t matter at all. Think about it. You’ve got some plastic that’s very thin and has air more over it, seperated from your head by sytrofoam basically which is an insulator that once again has air moving through it cooling it. The heat your head is disapating is a bigger deal than the helmet color.
You have a typo in the very first sentence of the review.
Here I am wearing the LG Chrono heading out of transition at Steelhead:

Not to hijack this thread Tom, but I thought you were riding a DA this year?
Good article on the helmets. I’ve been trying to piece this info together on my own. Thanks for putting it all in one place.
Brad
I actually do have a new DA. It is very nice. I got it together a trifle late in the game for the big show though. I’m still tinkering with it in anticipation of a review of the bike.
Speaking of reviews, we are do an anniveersary review of sorts on the bike you see me on in that photo.
Aw phooey. What is it?
If I wear a medium Giro Pneumo helmet will I wear a medium in the advantage 2. I am right between sizes according to the size charts I have seen.
… time “trail” helmet …
Great review, btw. I’ve been really bouncing back and forth, and hope to finally make a decision after reading the review a couple of times.
PS: If anyone knows where in the Austin area you can see the LG and Giro helmets up close and personal, please PM me.
Dang, I was looking forward to a spate of X-Rays showing how uncomfortable aero helmets are and the extra stress they place on the neck when worn in the correct plane.
Tom, I noticed you have worn the Limar Crono. Any reason why you did not include it in your review? i have the Limar, I also have the A2 on order. Please reply with your comparison of the two.
Thanks
Is it possible that the Spiuk closed tail is for structural reinforcement as much as the possible areodynamic advantage you evoke? As the lightest helmet, they may have had difficulties to meet the crash tests.
Good review and nice shots as always Tom.
Quick question: Is your model’s back really that flat when riding? I thought the point was getting the tail to sit on the rider’s back?
I request you send each helmet to me so I can do proper positional pictures for you ![]()
I’m not as worried about the color as I am about the lack of vents in aero helmets. You are calling 82 hot. Here in Florida 82 is a cold front. Summer triathlons here, starting in May with IM Florida 70.3, are in the mid 90’s and the humidity is off the charts.
I like the looks of the Spiuk but is there enough wind moving through the two vents in front to cool down the Florida heat? Also, Without wind testing we can simply assume that more venting means more drag (“venting is a drag”, lol just thought of that) are there too many vents in the A2, in your oppinion?
Great artical, the best I have seen on this subject!
Tom,
Great stuff and thank you. I would venture to guess that your reviews are as good and if not better than most in the two “leading” triathlon publications. Thanks.
Good review and nice shots as always Tom.

I was thinking the same thing. I have the LG Rocket and the Giro Advantage 2. I have written a couple short reviews on another thread. I am torn b/t the two for IMMoo in a couple weeks. I still find the Giro warmer and a lot noisier than the LG.
The other thing I have noticed is that the tail of the LG Rocket sits nicely on my back (not actually touching, but, close) when I am in the aero position. The tail on the Advantage 2 seems to sit quite a bit higher and does not come close to touching my back. I have also noticed this in pictures of the two helmets during triathlon races (also watching the Tour this year w/ the Disco boys wearing the Giro).
Not sure this makes a huge difference during the course of a 112 mile IM ride, but, based on everything I have read (and has been posted here) the tail should sit close to the back. No?
Thanks. I fixed it. Late nights…
Good questions.
First, is the Spiuk cool enough? My inclination is to say yes, but you do point out that “hot” and “cool” is a relative term. I don’t remember the temperature at Steelhead a few weeks ago but Jon Wojcik from our store wore the Spiuk Krono at Steelhead and said it was plenty cool enough for his taste. You’re right in saying that when it gets up to 82 here we consider that warm, whereas you Florida, Arizona and eastern/southern California gals and suys are reaching for a jacket…
Second, do more vents equal more drag? I don’t know. I sure wish I did. It seems like someone smarter than I/us on this forum would know that. Guys?
<<<<<<<<<<<or even preceivably any wormer than a road helmet even in 80+ degree temps
alright, michigander, those of us who know what hot is wouldn’t dare mention “hot” & “80” in the same sentence. 80 is a nice cool overnight low.
nice review though.
There was an addendum to the article that was “Tips on using an Aero Helmet” that included:
Keep still on the bike. Moving your head turns the tail fairing into the wind and may actually slow you down. Cooncentrate on watching the road and holding your head in a still, relaxed position with the fairing behind your head close to your back.
Tom, I believe keeping still may be important, but not critical. I think it was John Cobb who showed an aero helmet to be faster even when looking down or around.
Similar to the way a disk is faster even in a cross wind.
Hmm. That is interesting. I absolutely did not know that. I wish I could find a link to some of those tests to read and reference.
