Can you recommend some aero front wheels that are reasonably (say, under $400) priced? I hear the HED-3 is a great wheel, but $550 for one wheel makes me swallow hard. What are some other good, but perhaps not as expensive choices?
Also, where is a good place to get a rear wheel cover?
You can pick up a good secondhand 3spoke from ebay for around $200-250. Other good used options are Hed Cx, Hed Jet 60, Campy Shamal or Zipp 400 for around $150-200.
A custom disc wheel cover is available for $70. Here’s the url:
"Yup. Ebay is your answer. As always, check feedback carefully, etc. "
Good point. I should have mentioned that. I’ve done 300+ transactions on ebay, buying or selling, probably half are bike related and never had a single problem. It’s like anything else - do the research.
For under $400 you should be able to pick up a nice Hed H3 on eBay or in the classified section of this forum and other forums. It just takes time to find the right deal. Also, Hed sells H3 wheels that are out of factory specs (true) for first run quality. They used to sell them on their website: www.hedcycling.com for around $335 - $350, but I haven’t seen any there for a while. Also, if buying from eBay or the forums, double check and see if it’s factory second. I think Hed write on the rim with a sharpie marker the amount of side to side variance.
You can always post a “Want to Buy” ad in the classifieds as well. That’s how I got my H3 at a great price.
Buy a Spinergy Tilium (now the Stealth SS) for about $300. Carbon with aluminum rim, 50mm depth, works awesome with a 20mm tire, excellent shock absorbtion, no faults to speak of. Otherwise for your price there really isn’t anything aero, strong and reasonably light. Renn discs for the rear are unbeatable for the price.
