Aero Disc Covers (re-visited)

After reading tons of comments about these, I decided to get them. My only concern is about installation, how do they sit on the drive side of the wheel? Is there a minimum clearance between the big cog and the spokes for them to fit properly? I don’t want to order them and later find out they don’t fit or something.

Thanks.

The cover will rest against the hub away from the cogs.

I found that I had to tape the cover to the spokes on the drive side so the read der. wouldn’t hit it. After I had it on a few times I got better at it.

I had an issue when I got one for use with an older white industries hub on a lew wheel. I contacted Rich from wheelbuilder.com

his reply: 5mm is the distance required to clear your derailuer and cog set. If the chain and deraiuler are not touching the cover it is possible to just open up the center hole. Barb

can we get a picture of the wheel cover installed and halfway installed?

My chain hits the cover. Isn’t it only a problem if you are freewheeling, which doesn’t tend to happen when on the big cog.

It will leave a llight circular scuff where the chain hits it, but it is not very visible when installed.

There is a nice thread somewhere on this board that explains this very well - better than I can.

  • Remove cassette.
  • Make sure you have the drive side and non-drive side of your cover on the correct sides of the wheel.
  • Tighten each screw/bolt a little bit so that the cover stays centered on the hub and does not not migrate.
  • Go around the wheel tightening each screw/bolt a little more until done.

Very easy with Shimano sized hubs.

The key is to keep the cover centered on the hub - do not allow it to migrate or move off-center.

I really like my disc cover.

Had an interference issue with the White Industries hub. Solved it by rolling a flat sheet of coarse sandpaper into a cone and opening up the hole. Didn’t take much. Two seasons later I bought a Renn 575 and the wheel covers are hanging on the wall

Thanks for the info guys!
I will place the order next week.

I’ll be putting it together this weekend, I’ll try to get some pictures.

I’m also interested to buy the disc cover, because I don’t want to spend $600+ on a Disk that I’ll use 4-6 times a year.

I have one question for you guys and your help will be very appreciated. My wheels are Mavic Cosmic Carbone; I have to tell Wheelbuilder the measurement of my wheel so he can cut it, but I don’t know if it’s the full rim depth or where the spokes ends.

See this picture… A is where the spoke ends on the rim and B will be the full rim… Do you have any idea which two is the correct meassurement?

Thanks

hm, good question. All I could find on their site is this image: http://www.wheelbuilder.com/admin/images/rim_depth.jpg but in this one, the spokes go right in the middle (point B in your image).

I think the best you can do is to email Rich at wheelbuilder.com with your image. I’m sure he will tell you exactly what the deal is.

When I ordered mine, I had the same question as you, so I emailed Wheelbuilder a diagram of my wheel, and it worked out great.

How about emailing the diagram you just posted to Wheelbuilder? I think they will know what to do.

I saw that too. Do you have his email? because I looked on the website and didn’t find it; I only found a form to fill out.

Thanks!

Yeah, just fill that form out. He will reply. That’s what I did with the questions about my wheel.
