Aero brakes?

Anyone know of a company, make and model, who make a nice aero brake set??? thanks…

Find some old Campy Deltas. Or Modolo’s. Didn’t stop all that well, but they sure hid in the slip stream.

I like the Cheetah concept of hiding the front brake caliper behind the fork. I do not know why more companies do not do this.

not sure how well they actually stop, but euro-asia imports apparently might still has some new (but ancient old stock-“nos”) dura ace AX. they ain’t cheap though…

If it fits, you can probably use it on any fork

Don’t forget the old Shimano Dura Ace AX brakes. One thing about all the aero brakes mentioned - they work pretty poorly. I was able to find a pair of AX for my old Hooker 700c frame just to make it legal for TTs. I never use the rear brake as it works like cr@p. All the stopping power is on my front caliper brake. I’ve heard the same for the Delta brakes.

My suggestion would be to use normal brakes unless you can’t (e.g., Hooker rear brake which requires a narrow center pull brake). Time difference is negligible but functionality difference is huge.

Tektro makes a behind the fork brake now as well. I think that I saw it on Jans bike and in some Interbike pictures.

Them tektro brake used a different mount system than normal brakes, more like mountain bikes. I’ve never seen anything definitive on wether or not behind the fork is better. At one point someone was experimenting with a brake in the fork itself, but that has got to be a manufacturing/maintenance nightmare.

I’m with you on functionality. In this sport the need for a quick stop is rare but when someone ignores the traffic control, for example, you want good brakes. I had someone ignore a uniformed police officer and pull out in front of me in a race once. I didn’t have to lock 'em up but I had to slow down pretty fast. If you have a typical set-up you are already at a disadvantage in that you have to move off of the aero-bars to get to the brakes.

I think the brakes mentioned might be BMX brakes. If you look at them, they look very similar to what Jan was using, and they mount on posts, as opposed to the brake drilling on the crown.

Do you have any pics. I tried looking up Jan Ullrich on google images but did not see any pics of a behind the fork brake calipers.

Oh, wait. Upon finding the picture, the brakes look nowhere near like BMX brakes. I saw the display at Interbike only briefly and saw the calipers hanging there with a sign that said “aero only”. I thought they looked like BMX at first glance and assumed that they just put road pads onto the BMX callipers.

As for other brake options, what about the new carbon Lightweight ones or the Zero Gravity? I still prefer the modern D/A or Shimano/Campy stuff because even though you should only be braking once in a TT by theory, you still have day to day training where you have cars and stoplights to brake for.

I grabbed a Tektro book from the booth and leafed through it. There are no pages on this brakeset for some reason, or maybe I missed it going over it twice already. Are these brakes for normal road mounts, or do you need brake posts?

Another interesting thing I found that Mavic released this year is a brake bridge that allows you to use caliper (cantilever or V-brake as opposed to disc) brakes on a mountain bike while using 700c wheels. Can’t wait to put my Zipp disc on my mountain bike!!
