I am looking for some advice on wheels to use in a 20K TT. The course has four hills (moderate in length) and is relatively turny. Some of the turns are sweeping turns, others look a little bit sharp. You can see the course on Youtube:
Anyway, I am wondering what wheels I should use? I have a set of HED 3C’s and also an old set of Ksyriums (that I mainly train on). I am open to getting a new set of wheels if the consensus is that I am crazy to use tri-spokes on this course.
I watched the video and can’t see a reason not to just stick with the HED wheels you have. I don’t think they’re going to slow you down, and I don’t think you’re going to gain anything noticeable with another wheel set.
The Hed3Cs are great wheels and there is no reason not to use them on that course. They are lighter than the Ksyriums that you train on. Even on this course I’d recommend a disk but if you don’t already have one I wouldn’t recommend buying one because it wouldn’t make all that much difference.
I wondered this very question this past sunday- we had a sprint race with a 20k bike- I opted not to go with race wheels/disk as it was a C race and also my hubs said it wouldn’t make a difference- why are you saying it wouldn’t help that much? just trying to learn more- of course when I got there and toed the line everyone else came out in full on race gear…
Don’t get me wrong it will definitely make a difference, but it will probably be small over Hed3Cs. The lighter Hed3Cs will accelerate better out of all of the turns on that course but the disk will be faster in a straight line. Like I said, I like a disk in all circumstances except a completely up hill race.
