Anyone here from the Burlington, VT area? I just found out I’m moving from Seattle to Burlington, courtesy of my wife’s medical residency. So now I’m scrambling to learn as much as I can about the town.
I tracked down some handy info on tri and running clubs from previous posts on the forum (thank you ST). Now I’m trying to learn more about the neighborhoods and elementary schools in the area to figure out where to start looking for a house for the family.
Please PM me if can offer some advice. Main goals: A neighborhood with an excellent elementary school, relatively close to the UVM campus, where I can walk or a ride a bike to run errands and leave my car in the driveway most days (except when its 5 degrees). Any tips about the real estate market are welcome as well.
Burlington is FULL of hippie tree hugging liberals and what not. Plus Ben and Jerrys is there and you can get really fat. AND we fully expect to see you at IMLP as well.
(note: the woman at the Hertz rental car at the airport is named “Bing” and they have no bell. If you see her and she is in the office on the phone dont sit at the counter saying “Bing! Bing! Bing!” over and over again - she gets pissed.
PM me if you want. Lived there for 5 years, grew up in VT, and currently go back to Burlington every month. Search Essex, VT for a good town to live in, about 5-15 miles out of Burlington, scenic roads for run/bike, and great schools. Don’t know what you have for money for a home, but start looking now, because that is going to be a HUGE factor on what town you settle into. towns less than 3-5 miles apart can range from 150K condos to 5-600K houses. Again, PM me and I can talk to you more about the area.
I was there a couple years ago to move my parents about an hour south of Burlington, and I did a tri in Shelburne, which is just out of town there. Several of the athletes from Burlington are ST’ers and they hace a tri club there. One of them owns a nice resturante in Burlington, and was the race caterer, food was awesome. Spindog, Pedargrahm, and I forget the other handles, but they all live/lived there, and I’m sure will chime in here when they see it… Good luck, it is a beautiful area, but they get a real winter there…But snow is way better than rain in my opinion, so you will have that going for you…
burlington is a surprising hotbed of Tri talent with a few pro’s living there and great AG talent as well. My sister has lived there for 15-20 yrs and loves it…Too fricking cold for me. However there is tons of outdoor stuff to do all year round.
great place…I lived on “the other side of the lake” for many years in the ADKS. Also spent most of my adolecent years in VT as a Ski racer. I am always shocked that there are not more tri people there. Granted Alex MM was able to earn the IM world champion amateur title while as a medical student at UVM. There is great riding in the great Burlington area! Hope you like Snow, hummus, Ice cream and Phish!
Thanks for the advice, all. Very encouraging to hear about the tri scene. Fortunately, I like nordic ski racing, so I think I can survive the winters. I will need to get a car with 4-wheel drive.
Alas, I’m not up for a full IM yet, so no show at Lake Placid (maybe next year). I already looked up the schedule for Mooseman, however. Looks like Timberman’s already booked.
Several people have mentioned Essex. We were hoping to be near the hospital, directly in Burlington, where wife will be working. Anyone have a favorite elementary school and neighborhood in Burlington?
