Advice for Cold Water Swim

I am doing IM CDA next week. The water there is normally cold, but it looks like the weather has been real cool, so it will be even colder this year.
I have trouble staying warm enough in cold water–any advice besides using 2 swim caps or a neoprene cap? Thanks.

Earplugs help a lot

Have someone pour a thermos of warm water down the back of your wetsuit.

Suck it up.

No just kidding. Just try and get used to it. Once your body warms it is ok. Try not to think about it, you’ll find you are almost psching yourself out by constantly thinking abou the cold. I am BC Canada and the water here is around the same and all I wear is an Orca Pflex, a normal cap and goggles. My feet are cold for a little bit and my face but then I concentrate on holding my stroke and it all goes away.

Hope that helps.

To stay warmer, swim harder!

Swam 70.3 in Switzerland two weeks ago with 51F (13C) degree h2otemps. My problem is the Mammilian reflex where cold water makes you stop breathing. I now try and get my face in the water for 10 solid minutes before the start and once the face is numb the reflex doesnt kick in. As far as your body getting cold, I swim pretty hard and its not a problem.
