Adorama Sucks At Online Retail

My RANT:

I make an online purchase of $500 worth of equipment from Adorama–first time using them. I need this stuff this weekend so I order 2-day air. One item arrives and then I get an email stating the other item–the most important one–is on back order. WTF, would have been nice to know this before placing the order and paying for expedited shipping. That sucks and is shady bullshit that pisses me off.

I figure I will call and find out what the fucking story is. One problem, recorded message states that due to the holidays the store is closed until April 17th!!!

WTF!!

This is absolute bullshit. Scam me on an item you don’t even have in stock–was not noted as such at checkout and is still available on the site now–then tell me you’re closed.

It does look like customer service will be open on Sunday. Should be an interesting conversation. The backorder issue aside how the fuck am I supposed to know the store is owned by Orthodox Jews.

Even now you could go to the site and place and order and you wouldn’t get your stuff until they open again. WTF is wrong these people?

Idiots.

Every NY camera store is owned by Orthodox Jews (well at least the big ones, Adorama, B&H, Abes). And they all observe the Sabbath, so they won’t even take orders on Saturday, but that is disclosed on their site…

Once you put an item in your cart

Adorama Holiday Schedule:
Adorama Shipping department will be closed for the Passover Holiday from Wednesday, April 8 and will reopen on Friday, April 17 at 9:00 am.
Please Note: Our Goal for all orders submitted to us during the holiday, will be delivered to our customers’ door by Wednesday April 22 *
Thank You for your understanding, and for your business.

  • This assurance is not applicable for orders with free shipping. Please consider to upgrade the shipping option to assure quicker delivery time

I guess you learn something new everyday.

That message definitely didn’t come up when I placed my order on Monday. I’m not too bent out of shape about them being closed, selling an item you don’t have is bullshit though especially when I pay for 2 day shipping.

Gee, I’m glad that $8.95 lens cap came in two days, but where is my $450 item?

I only balme myself for this debacle–I should have researched this company first.

If so I would have found this:

http://www.adoramasucks.com

This guys story is just like mine, place an order only to find it is really on “backorder.” I bet this company runs a negative cash conversion cycle if they are taking customer money first then waiting weeks to send out the orders.

Sleezy bastards.

This is not just a problem in the Orthodox community, I’ve order stuff from several retailers including Performance bikes and Amazon.com to find out that it wasn’t in stock. Is this really a problem with the retailer or a problem with you procrastinating on getting what you needed?

2nd day air just means that when it leaves their site it “should” get to you by some carrier within 2 days. In the case of my “backorder” from performance it took them two weeks to find a set of tires I could have gotten in 20 minutes by going to another brick and mortar store and paid more for. Which I ended up doing and canceling the order.

They (I think by law - Maybe its the CC terms) can only charge you for what they shipped. A lot of times an item will show as “available now” or “available in 1-2 days”, that’s the classic Amazon BS.

Adorama and B&H are kind of like UPS and Fedex. You’ll find people that love one and hate the other. I’ve had very good experiences with Adorama, and they are very reputable (some camera shops are shady), but that does not make them imune from the screw up. I’d be interested to hear a follow-up once you talk to them.

Whenever I need something by a certain date, I pick up the phone, because I’ve wound up in your situation, where it takes 3 days for them to pack the item and then they 2-day ship it…

Yeah I’m gonna say this is the retailers problem. If I order an item on Monday with 2day air so I can have it by the weekend (Sat) how is that procrastinating? My only problem is that I deviated from my normal channels in search of a better price. For example, had I gone to this guy I would have seen immediately that my product was OUT OF STOCK. hence I would not have lost out on 2day shipping for a god dam lense cap!

It’s like you calling your local tri store asking for a specific tire and the guy saying sure we have it, only they reallyy don’t and he just wanted to get you into the store. I don’t think I have ever paid for an item online only to find out that it is not in stock–before the order yes, but never after.

All this venting is making me feel a little better–only slightly though.

Totally agree that the shop should have a better user interface to let you know that the stock is either low or gone in item you’re attempting to buy. Maybe I’m a little odd in this way, if I knew I needed something for Saturday I wouldn’t have waited till the previous Monday to order it. In my opinion, and it’s just me, I’d say you waited to long. Again 2nd day air doesn’t mean you’re going to get your purchase in 2 days.

Nice racist generalizations. you’re an ass.

Not to be a bee in the bonnet, but I think it is more antisemitic than racist. But of course, we jews control the financial markets so I’m sure we have a lot more blame to face than this persons ecommerce deal. That said, you are right he is an ass.

My apologies. I am sometimes confused as to whether people look at us as a race, people, or religion.

If the website had been owned by an African-American, and the time off was due to Kwanzaa, what would be the title of the thread be?

If the website had been owned by muslims who were simply on vacation, what would the title of the thread be?

You don’t have to apologize to anyone. If the comment is related to race it is racist. If it is related to religion it is antisemitic. There is no appropriate title for this thread other than “I’m stupid”.

You don’t want to include Abe’s in that list. Abe’s is well-known for being crooked, which is saying something in the camera business, given that pretty much all of them are criminals. B&H and Adorama are pretty much the only credible specialist retailers in the business.

I’ve spent a shitload of money on photo equipment over the years, and any pro will tell you that B&H and Adorama are at the top of a very short list of places to buy photo equipment. Yes, they are Orthodox Jews, something immediately obvious if you go to either superstore.

But if you want to rant about their policies, or say that Adorama sucks, feel free to patronize any of their competitors. Odds are you will be very very sorry.

I usually check resellerratings before buying something online. It only takes a few seconds, and they seem to have pretty comprehensive coverage of the various online shops.

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/B_H_Photo_Video_Pro_Audio (9.71/10)

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Adorama (9.35/10)

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Abe_s_of_Maine(7.64/10)

A 7.6 rating wouldn’t normally scare me away, but I think I’ve heard bad things about Abe’s from many people. If you read the ratings, you see plenty of annoying stuff.

Of the above, I’ve only used B&H, but I thought they were great. A professional artist I know went there all the time when she lived in New York. She said the store itself was amazing.

You don’t have to apologize to anyone. If the comment is related to race it is racist. If it is related to religion it is antisemitic. There is no appropriate title for this thread other than “I’m stupid”.

Or: “I suck at Internet”

Spouse has spent mid five figures at B&H over the years for work supplies, and, for whatever reason frequently seems to end up needing to order something during the Jewish fall holidays. Their closures are annoying but he feels like the total customer service experience is worth the closure annoyance.

Calumet photo tends to be a little more expensive, but generally has very good customer service.

Abe’s works under a bunch of dba’s so you can’t necessarily use those ratings. A number of other dodgy camera retailers do the same. There’s a guy online who went to the trouble of tracing and photographing a bunch of online/phone camera retailers back to actual street addresses, which turn out to be non-descript storefronts or homes in Brooklyn. It’s a very dirty business, and its pretty clear that pros go to B&H/Adorama, and the sheep get fleeced everywhere else because they shop on price, often very unrealistic prices.

B&H is a piece of work - its gotten bigger over the years, but the guiding principle is that you never actually carry anything you’re buying around - you get to inspect it, put it on your list, and then it disappears into a bunch of overhead buckets that travel tracks through the store. You only get it after you’ve paid. It’s sort of weird, but when you’re talking about items with extremely high value/mass, I guess it makes sense. I’d be interested in knowing their shrinkage numbers - presumably tiny.

Yep, she told me about the buckets. I’m definitely going the next time I am in Manhattan.

I would like to apologize that I came late to this thread - as I was off when it was posted.
I would also like to apologize that you were inconvenienced when ordering from Adorama Camera, and attempt to explain how our stock situation works.
With high demand items, frequent delivery and dispatch times mean that items can come in one door of the warehouse, be packaged, and out of another door within a couple of hours, so real time inventory on the website is often not possible.
Unless the items actually hit the shelves, our computer system generates an automatic message in response to an order, indicating that it is out of stock.

Another possible scenario, is that you could see an in-stock indication, if a shipment was expected into the warehouse within the next 24 hours - but again, the systems we have, aren’t currently set up to be able to handle this (although we are currently working on it), and our computer sends a standard message indicating that the item is back-ordered.

Finally, even with the website inventory, it is entirely possible that we could receive several dozen orders for a popular item such as this at the same time - by telephone or via our website; if we have 59 in stock but receive 60 orders, it isn’t always going to be immediately obvious that one customer is going to be disappointed.

The most accurate indication is by speaking directly to a sales rep - but if you are unable to get in touch with a rep regarding a particular item, you are always welcome to get in touch with me and I will check out the stock situation for you.

At Adorama we do appreciate that our closing times can be inconvenient to some of our potential customers.
Adorama’s owner is an observant orthodox Jewish gentleman, whose beliefs prohibit him - his family and his business - from operating on the Sabbath and on many of the religious holidays (which all begin an hour prior to sunset the evening before the day of the holiday, which is why we close early on Fridays).

We can’t employ non-Jews here during those days, because to do so would involve the company conducting business - which is forbidden in Jewish Law.

In this era of 24-hour commerce, I guess it’s unusual to find that there really are still people who consider their spiritual duty to be more important than squeezing money out of our customers at every opportunity. I receive frequent emails from customers who state that in this day and age it is comforting to know there are people around who do not place money before all else.

Many businesses in the US and elsewhere in the world force employees to work on holidays when the time is better spent with their friends and families - or just relaxing by themselves.

We do appreciate the understanding of our customers that this is an important element of our owner’s value system. Perhaps the following links to articles in the Washington Post & the New York Times will help to make some sense of our closure policies:

Jews? Really? Taking pictures of Mel Gibson?

I have changed the title of this thread. I knew people would be offended, but posted anyway. That was dumb, I’m sorry.

Now, back to the customer service issues. I finally got an email back. Here it is in it’s “entirety”:

Later? WTF? So I called them and finally got through to a rep, they said that my item would “likely” be available on 5/9/2009. I placed my order on 4/7/2009.

This item is still available on their site and that is BS.
