I just got a HED disc for my bike. I rod eit today and everything was off. The bike is a felt 2003 S32. It has a 55 tooth front cog and a shimano 105 rear casseste with 23-12 gearing. The hed wheel has a shimano cassete ( dont knwo which one) with 21-11 gearing. When i up shift with the hed wheel it will shift every other gear. so I can go from 1st to 3rd to 5th. I can get the middle gears by downshifting. It downshifts fine. On the small front gear it upshifts fine up until the last 2 gears. I never use the small ring so that doesnt matter. Is ti possible to set it up so it works with both wheels?
Also on a side note how can I tell what type of cassete is on the HED. Curious if it is 105 or ultegra. thanks
If you are shifting “up” the rear cassette and the chain is jumping 2 cogs, then the cable is too tight. Its pulling the rear der too far for each shift. You need to put “slack” in the rear cable. Its VERY easy. At the rear der, you’ll find a small knob where the cable enters the der. Turn this 1/4 turn clockwise. Check the shifting and adjust further if necessary. Each wheel is a tad different. The model cassette really does not matter. Each time you change wheels you may need to make this small adjustment. Just remember how many turns and in which direction you turned it and it’ll stay the same for quite some time.
I change wheels a few times each week. I change from 25-12 to 23-12 to 21-12’s and any other combinations I have. I also change from 7 speed to 8 speed and back and forth constantly. Its no big deal as long as you make a few minor adjustments when you change over. I have 7 rear wheels all with different cassettes.
what it is doing is when i upshift it does not shift to the next gear, it doesnt go far enough. If i shift 2 gears up it will go 2 gears up and then I can down shift to the other gear. How do I adjust the derailer?
In order to shift to a larger cog, you need to tighten the cable to apply more pressure to the derailleur. If you don’t get a proper up shift, the problem is likely that the cable needs to be tighter.
You can tighten the cable by unscrewing the knob at the rear of the derailleur. This will increase the length of the cable run and stretch the cable. Just a small turn will do. Maybe a quarter to a half a turn. Then try it. Repeat if required.
The other adjustments that can get out of whack is the high and low limit screws. These are more of a pain. I haven’t found a good way for my wheels to track limit screws reliably. Presumably small spacers would work, but I have never done this.
Whoops…sorry about that…wrong fix. The cable is too loose. Start by turning the knob counter clockwise to take slack out of the der cable. Cables stretch after awhile and this tightens the cable back up again. Remember - only a 1/4 turn at a time. It doesn’t take much! 1/4 turn - test the shifting - 1/4 turn again - test shifting and so on til it shifts correctly.
