Hello all I’m still a bit new around here, but enjoying the vast and deep knowledge base…wish the internet had been around when I was racing my behind off!
I’m still settling into my bike position, feel great but sometimes wish I could tweak my stem and try a bit more reach and maybe a tweak less height.
Back in the ‘old days’ of quill stems and black and white t.v.;)…we didn’t have nearly the options with rise variability and whanot. Then LOOK dropped the Ergostem on us and we had options. Myself and a few college pals chipped in and split the cost of one which was still about $250 even around 1990 which was big $$$ for a component of any kind.
I have tapped out the usage of taking out spacer or adding on my steerer tube/fork so it’s really just up to the stem.
I’m about to drop money on a new one since I cannot seem to find any used…unless someone can steer me to another brand with the amazing options afforded the Look. It’s just not feasible for me to run to a LBS and have them tweak something every time my body gets a twinge to change…any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Check Ebay for Look Ergostems…one tip is that a quill version can be “upgraded” to a threadless version by ordering the just the steerer tube clamp portion from Look through your LBS. That could end up being MUCH less expensive of an option than buying one brand new.
That said, it’s tough to beat the Ergostem for overall adjustability when “tweaking” bar positions.

Really? That is awesome thanks for the 411.
Yeah…it might be hard to find a LBS that will do the ordering and it might take a few weeks, but the rest of the stem is identical between the 2 versions. I was ready to do that before I was able to snag a threadless version on Ebay for a reasonable price.
I’ve never had a problem dealing with Universal either.
Thanks, but I tried out the Richey version of this as there are several others. Your only control over the length is with height adjustment and those changes are small. I really have to get control over both of those variables to get myself tuned in…thx though.
Be sure of what you are getting if you get a quill to upgrade. The very old quills are for 26.0 bars and do not have a face plate type mount. So many newer aero bars will not work with those.
good luck

Thanks and I actually remembered that back in the day 26.0 was it! I’m an official roadie and like my ‘hooks and hoods’ and big, fat unaero STI levers;) with cables flying around everywhere.
