Addicted to eating peanut butter

I eat the smuckers natural peanut butter and go through a jar a week or sooner. For breakfast each morning I have anywhere from 1/2 cup to a cup of oatmeal and 2-4 table spoons of peanut butter in it. I even put it in my grape nuts yesterday. I will also have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich during the day. I am trying to drop about five pounds before my A race in July. Is it ok to be eating peanut butter like this or is this a major diet no no. Advice needed please.

Matt

monounsaturated fat goooooooooooooood…
saturated fat baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad…

considering 14 or the 16 gs of fat in smuckers is monunsaturated, I’d say peanut butter is fine.

How about the oatmeal, what kind of oatmeal are you eating. Hopefully not the instant kind, or the quick oats. Make sure you get the ones that are just oats, no added crap to make them cook faster, and nothing with sugar in it (all the instant ones are VERY high in this).

Best oat meal around: steel cut oats. About 3 times more, but 10 times the nutritional value! To bad they take 30 minutes to cook!

Peanut butter is of course the greatest of all foods, it deserves its own food group.

I also eat Smucker’s natural in large quantities, but PB is pretty calorie dense. You might want to try smaller portions of it until you reach your goal weight.

Matt, how much does a jar of peanut butter weigh ? Its going into your body and likely storing itself as fat at the rate you are eating it. Even the most natural peanut butter has a reasonable amount of sat fat in it, so I would not go nuts with eating the stuff. Some peanut butter in moderation is good. I eat 2 PB&Jam whole wheat bagels per day using about a teaspoon over the two sandwiches. I’ll add one more if I am riding over 4 hours (I eat them on rides too). It takes my 3 months to get through a jar (1Kg)

I eat the natural PB as well, but not in that quantity. You need to make sure you’re not going overboard in your total cumulative fat intake for the day. If the fat from the PB is all the fat you’re taking in for the day, that’s one thing. But if it’s only a portion of your fat intake for the day, you need to be careful and add up your total fat intake. I take no more than 55-70g of total fat per day. Bodyfat is 5-6% range.

As Hawaiins have Poy, as Australians have Vegimite, as Greeks have the olive, and as the Dirty Secrets thread has cost my employer nearly $645 worth of my time, America has peanut butter.

Long live Peanut Butter. When Douglas Adams claimed that the answer was 42, I scoffed. I know the true answer lies in the layer of oil and you technique for how to stir that slimy goodness back into the cream (or chunk as I prefer).

As far as production jars go, I find Adams (in the Pacific Northwest) to be some of the best. Right now, Ralphs supermarket is a close second.

All hail Peanut Butter. Spread the word.

Peanut butter is great, but eat it in moderation. It does have quite a bit of fat and calories. Even though it is the ‘good’ fat, too much can’t be good, especially if your trying to drop 5 pounds.

Why is steel cut better? Certainly the instant stuff is crap, but I thought the other stuff (regular, steel cut, quick) was just different ways of cutting the grain. How does that change the nutritional value?

They are actually rolled oats, so they roll them flat. Hard to roll oats without breaking them, so steam is used to soften, then they are rolled…when they do this, some of the good stuff is “washed out” by the steam, water, or whatever method they use. Not a huge difference, but I like the taste of the steel cut better. I still devour the rolled oats too!

I guess I will try and cut back a bit. I thought about going cold turkey, but I would probably go through withdrawl…I love the stuff.

The oatmeal I buy is quaker “one minute” is that bad?

Matt

Not bad by any means, tons better then most other breakfest cereals…but lots of crap added. (from www.quakeroatmeal.com)

Regular Rolled Oats Ingredients: 100% NATURAL ROLLED OATS

Instant Oats Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED OATS (WITH OAT BRAN), SUGAR, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, SALT, CALCIUM CARBONATE, GUAR GUM, CARAMEL COLOR, NIACINAMIDE, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, REDUCED IRON, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE, RIBOFLAVIN, THIAMIN MONONITRATE, FOLIC ACID

I like my foods as nature as possible, and the less ingredients the better. You have to wonder, why do they need all that crap in it!

If its just the 1-minute rolled oats as opposed to the normal ones…those oats are just rolled thinner is all.

Don’t feel bad. I have a double addiction to peanut butter and burritos (not at the same time…yet). I feel the need to destroy myself a few times a week to work off the PB and burritios. It happens. I’m not giving either of them up. Don’t worry, you are only in the first stage of addiction.

Josh

I need all that crap in it because a) it’s fast and I eat breakfast at my desk at work and 2) it tastes damn good. the cinammon roll oatmeal is a small slice of heaven.

Peanut Butter rocks. I’ve tried the natural stuff and it is ok…but I’ll just stick with Jiff as it makes me very happy. Especially when I microwave it and put it over a nice bowl of samoa girl scout cookie ice cream…with choco syrup on top of it all.

If you want to lose 5 pounds, just work out more and cut back on the calories a little bit. No need to quit eating the good stuff. Why would anybody stop eating something they like (unless it’s going to kill you)? If it makes you happy then do it. Personally…I would be miserable if all I ate was “healthy” food.

The large brands used to put hydrogenated fat in it to make it smooth. I don’t kno w if they changed that but you can check on the jar. Big no no if you have cholesteral issues. Natural PB doesn’t usually have that but they you have to stir it up.

I eat peanut butter better~

WEll Jiff Just doesnt have anything Big enough, I went to a health food store and bought a 15 lbs bucket of natural creamy peanut butter. it was 45$ but worth it because its healthier.

I finished it in 1 month. Now the store bought me a 35.5 lb BUCKET of peanut butter I hope to pick it up today. It just sucks to stir. But I have some nice Buckets around the house now.

Thats the way to go is either GEt sponsored! Or go to health food store and buy in BULK!!!

Peanut butter on Waffles EVERY MORNING!!!

Damn, I need to look into that. Between me, two dogs, and two blue and gold macaws, we got through 2 jars of pb a week. I normally pay $5-$6 for a little jar of it, 15 lbs for $45 is a steal!!! I’m going to go check it out this weekend

just watch out for standard grocery store brands which sometimes have hydrogenated fats (to keep oil from separating) and some have (I think Jif?) lots of sugar.

PB has lots of monosaturated fat and vit E, just saw something to the effect that Vit E helps prevent parkinson’s disease.

SP

I only eat the natural stuff…if it has more then two ingredients listed (peanuts and salt), I normally don’t buy it. I think the natural stuff tastes WAY better anyways.

Didn’t know it had vit E…one more reason to go home and chow some!

Buy the natural kind, and then pour off the oil that separates to the top. Probably saves a couple hundred calories per jar. Tastes just as good to me, and you don’t have to stir that damn thing! It just doesn’t spread quite as easily (whooopdeedoo).

I get mine freshly ground at Whole Foods and then spread it on toasted cinnamon raisin Ezekiel 4:9 bread that I also buy there. Yay, er, yum!

Peanut butter has been berry berry good to me.
