Adapting a 1 1/8" fork to a bike that comes with a 1" fork

Can you use a 1 1/8" 3T Funda fork in a P3SL frame that uses originally a Cane Creek IS-2, 1" headset.

I was not expecting this, but the frame is coming w/o headset.

No, it won’t work. You’re trying to put a larger piece (steerer tube) into a smaller hole (head tube).

I imagined that  .

Thanks.

Sergio

Won’t help you, but in case anyone else was wondering, they do make reducer sleeves to go the other way.

Wait, do you need a 1" fork or a new headset? Seems to me that you will need both?

I have the 1? fork and also the Funda fork.

I will try to find a 1" headset.

Thanks for the advice.

Sergio

It is not at all difficult to source a headset - you are in Mexico correct?

It is difficult, but a friend from ST coming to Mexico will secure one for me.

Too bad your friend failed at finding it before heading to Mazatlan:)

Let me know, I may need to come down again in a few weeks in order to get my resident visa figured out.

If you can get the fork to fit into the headtube, it is possible. I don’t know the I.D. of cervelo’s headtube. I know VP makes some custom headset bearings that are very close to the OD of the 1" IS-2A bearings that are used for 1" intergrated headsets. 38.8mm i memory serves me, much smaller than the standard ~41.2-41.4mm 1.125" IS standard. You’d need a skilled machinist, but it is possible.

I’ve got an old 1" press in headset frame that was adapted to 1.125" with some brazed on headset cups. Nothing is impossible I suppose.

Why not use a 1" fork?

Hey Dave, Thanks for bringing that frame to Mexico! I came back today from La Paz. I am sorry we did not have time to meet on this trip.

I already secured the headset, but the fork is something else.

You need to talk to my father about that visa. I am glad you had the chance to meet him.

Best wishes and I hope you had a nice stay.

Dave, thanks for the tip about building some custom bearings. Doing that will be relatively easy down here. I have an artist at hand for that type of work, but first I will try to find a 1" aero fork in time. Finding a 1" fork is not an option in Old Mexico.

Best wishes,

Sergio
