Sometimes after a hard long ride or a weight room session, my right achilles tendon feels like a spring recoilling when I walk (particularly on stairs). Sorry if that’s not a good description, but it’s the closest I can describe the feeling. Never any pain and the “recoilling” only lasts a day or two. Have had this several times over the past couple. Not a runner, just a TT racer.
Is this a harbinger of something going wrong? Would appreciate any insight.
If your cycling shoe is irritating the paratenon, this can happen. Most tendons in the body glide in a tendon sheath. Cells in the tendon sheath lubricate the tendon and protect it some. The achilles is unique in that it does not have a true tendon sheath, but a paratenon. This thin covering is pretty easily “irritated” with repititive stress (like a stiff heel counter). It can then bind down or become inflamed. As the main tendon glides under this paratenon, one can often get this “spring like” feeling. It generally goes away quickly since the paratenon is very vascular if the ensuing aggravator is removed. Can be a precursor to full blown achilles tendinosis though.
