Correct. That’s an example of someone who definitely should be going through SafeSport. And that training should be robust, detailed, specific.

The problem is when you’re trying to adapt SafeSport to the unique needs of individual sports. And this is, again, one of those weird intersections of where the mass participatory side of the sport does not align well with the Olympic development cycle side.

This isn’t to say there shouldn’t be SafeSport training for coaches, race directors, or even certain roles on race day (I think the best example are change tents at IM distance events.)

And, for emphasis – USAT is claiming that they have issued updated guidance to race directors to that effect on or around mid May. However, the 30 days out emails to sanctioned race directors continues to point out the version of the policies that we referenced in the original version of the article. So if there’s new guidance, we are yet to see it actually get to the hands of RDs.
