I am not entirely sure why I am shocked at this but…
I was looking for someone to proof a paper - not content, not to edit, but a professional proof reader who’d highlight my illiteracy
It turns out, there is an entire industry willing to not just proof, but write, edit, develop everything from admissions essays to doctorates
now, whilst I am sure some are cowboys, there are firms that will provide “complete support” from development of doctorate idea through supporting it to viva.
what the fuck?
seriously? its obviously not overly difficult IF these firms can access journals, plagiarism software etc, but seriously. how many people are paying other people to do ALL their work for them?
I have realised on my own course, that as bad as I think my writing is, there are some who will struggle in the extreme, so I am pretty confident not all of them will be submitting their own work. It also now makes sense why so little of the course is exam based…

Bingo. This was the case well over a decade ago as well. When I was an undergrad I offered friends at other schools to do their Econ homework for them for a fee. I was only charging $300 per course per semester but all of the assignments had the same questions to the point where it was almost copy/paste.
…one of those kids graduated from Vanderbilt and went on to work for Bear Sterns. He didn’t understand the relationship between bond prices and interest rates for his entire first year (I’m not kidding). His primary skillset was drinking copious amounts of alcohol and socializing.
Rich kids have always gotten their way into university one way or another. It’s probably harder for them to get away with it in the modern era compared to days past when the dean could just put their name on a list for any or no reason.
In undergrad I would occasionally help out friends. One guy had an assignment to write some sort of personal story/anecdote that he gifted me a case of cheap beer to ghostwrite.
I was bored, so I took a bit of creative license and crafted a tale that, amongst other awesomeness, involved riding the rails hobo style on a quest for personal discovery. I gave it to him assuming he would at least read the damn thing before turning it in, but I apparently assumed to much. His prof thought it was so great she wanted to have coffee and discuss the subject further which was awkward since he had no idea what she was talking about.
My son was a TA for lower years a few years ago in software engineeing. He would catch people cheating and report to professor. Very little was done. I seems to be endemic and universities look at students as a revenue stream. But as a student it will bite you. How are you going to write high level code in your job or internship it you cannot do it for school?
I also have zero intention of having anyone write anything for me. What I am currently pondering is whether it is legitimate for someone to review my grammar and typos.

I can string a sentence together occasionally. I’d like to at least ensure that if my work is rubbish it’s spelt correctly
