Academic and sporting elite all rolled into one

I just noticed that in this fortnightly magazine for nz lawyers that a judge’s clerk for the president of the court of appeal (2nd highest court in this country) is also one of the best mountainbikers in nz. Is this pretty common in other places too?

I can’t speak for how common it is, but its certainly my goal.

I’ve heard of a few PhD’s and Msc’s in Triathlon rosters, But not necessarily the elite.

Try this one:

Michael Hutchinson, UK time trial champion (40K pb somewhere in the 46 minute region if I recall), also has a PhD in International Human Rights Law from Cambridge University!

I would bet that many good amature triathletes are pretty smart people. Triathlon is a sport that requires a pretty decent understanding of training and nutrition. On top of that, this is not a cheap sport. Simply, smarter people tend to make more money, thus they can participate in sports that cost hundreds of dollars per race.

It’s about drive and determination…

The Honorable Byron White was a Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1961 to 1993. In about 1940, as a college running back, “Whizzer” White set a football record, total yards from scrimmage in season I think, that stood up for almost 50 years until Barry Sanders broke this record as a senior at Oklahoma State. When he was attending Yale Law School, Whizzer White would take the train frm New Haven down to New York city on the weekends because he was holding down a job as the highest paid professional football player in the country while in law school.

According to The Brethern, a book by Robert Woodward, Justice White, then in his 60s, would beat up the Supreme Court law clerks in pickup games that were played in the basketball court that is located in the Supreme Court building.
