About to get burned selling wheels on Ebay - options?

Having tried to sell on ST but didn’t, I have some wheels listed on Ebay which close shortly and one of the high bidders just retracted their bid. So its now a ridiculously low price and within a few hours of closing. Is there a way to cancel without buying the fees? This is nuts that buyers can retract offers. Thanks.

Thanks Warwick. Looks like my goose is cooked on this one. Live and learn why ST classifieds are better.

Or set a reserve next time
.

I think you’ll do ok. Still three hours and it’s at 600 now. Not sure what the selling price here was but they are from 2004 and there’s enough time for the price to go up to make it reasonable for both parties.

I buy and sell on ebay very regularly. The reserve comment is on par with my thoughts. Ebay has made it difficult for sellers in the past few years with 10% fees and the inability to leave negative feedback for buyers. However, I have been able to make great profits by the large net it casts over the entire web. I tried selling a powertap here for instance and got reasonably low offers but was able to sell on ebay for $100+ more even after shipping and fees. It’s up to you to protect yourself on ebay.

Thanks warwicke. You’ve obviously got some experience there. I’m amazed there’s little expectations on buyers and everything on sellers esp with the fees the sellers pay. Also relieved to see the bid get above $400!!

Good luck. Since you have bidding activity people usually wait until the last few minutes to ramp things up. No one just came out guns blazing. I think you will do ok. Best of luck

Graham,

I never place an Ebay bid any earlier than 5 seconds before the very end of the auction, At that point I will bid what the item is worth to me and no more. There are many more buyers like me.

You may be fine.

THIS^^^^ Why just keep bidding the item up before then?

If it’s something that I really need (or more usually, just want) then I’ll wait until the end and try to snipe it.

But if it’s something that I would like (not want, just like) then I’ll put a bid in early with what I think would be a great price for it. If I don’t get it, then no big deal. I’ve gotten some great deals on stuff that way.

Get a buddy to bid your minimum price (what you’d set a reserve for) and see what happens. Worst case scenario is you eat the fees. Best case scenario is someone outbids your buddy thus going over your manufactured reserve.

Well … someone got a good deal … pair of very good condition HED 3’s for $675. Wont do that again! LOL

Good for you for not flaking out. Too many sleazy sellers out there already.

Considering you were selling them for like 3-4 months without success at 800, maybe 675 is right 10 year old wheels.

Ghost bidding is as low class!

A set of H3s cost just under $1000 in 2004. I don’t think you can really complain about selling a 10 year-old set of wheels for almost 70% of its original cost. In fact, I’d say you made a killing.

This. I just upgraded my wheel stable on the Bay over the last couple of months. I paid about $1500 total for an old HED disc, a set of 2013 Zipp 303 tubbies, and a nearly new Aeolus 90mm D3 tubular front.

The seller made out quite well with $675 for 10 year old wheels.

Don’t feel too bad if you pocketed $675 I feel you made out nicely. Buyer did ok, you did ok. Is $675 what you put in your pocket after shipping and ebay raping? I have passed probably $10k worth of cycling wares on ST classifieds. Easy peasey, pleasurable experiences.

I think they are up to 10% now on sellers fees. That should almost be illegal
