About global warming

I’ll pick on Gore. No reason that with his money and his resources he shouldn’t be living in a household that is near self sustaining. From what I can tell he’s not even trying to implement any current cool technology.

Honestly instead of saying some BS like “Hey I buy carbon offsets” he could have been a HUGE champion for new technolgy by saying “Ok over the next “X” years I will implement new technology that will reduce the carbon footprint of my estate to next to zero”.

I’d love to have just his connections, not to mention his expendable income to implement some of these things.

Huh?

I’ll pick on Gore. No reason that with his money and his resources he shouldn’t be living in a household that is near self sustaining. From what I can tell he’s not even trying to implement any current cool technology.

Gore tried to put in a solar roof last year. He was thwarted by the local neighborhood association which classified solar panels as “generators”, and said that generators could only be mounted on the ground.

Somewhere along the line they got the neighborhood assn to cave and now Gore has:

http://www.treehugger.com/solar-roof-at-al-gore-home.jpg

Next up for Gore is a geothermal heating system, as well as a rainwater collection system for irrigation.

Well, maybe, but…think of all the carbon emitted building that solar panel! If Gore wasn’t such a hypocrite, he’d have built that panel with zero emissions. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Like that picture will shut down any criticisms of Gore…

Like I said, absolutely no reason fro gore to not only be implementing these types of technologies but showcasing them as well.

It certainly lessens my criticism. It’s one thing to champion a cause, it’s a completely different thing to live by the cause. As stated several times no reason Gore shouldn’t have all the “green” goodies as I’m sure he knows the people to get them and I’m guessing plenty of people would be willing to give him a price break just to have their product be associated with him.

“If you look at the maps Mr. Gore showed us a lot of people will be swimming very quickly”

If by “quickly” you mean over a period of 20-50 years, then you might have something. Just who is saying this stuff will happen “quickly”?

What you’re saying is that the volume of water is increasing because of the effect of the temperature on that liquid water, rather than because of melted land ice flowing into it. But the effect is still increased water volume, and therefore of rising sea levels. That doesn’t contradict anything that the OP said, nor does it respond to his question.

It was an interesting observation. I just wondered why you brought it up in the first place, and also why you thought the OP was unaware of it (you said he had a “commonly held misconception” on the subject).

That’s not totally correct. It all depends on the initial temperature of the water. Water is at it’s most dense at 39F. So as liquid water warms from 32F to 39F, it actually decreases in volume, then as it passes 39F it will start to increase. The reverse is why lakes do not freeze solid in the winter (the water on the bottom stays at 39F).

So in the artic regions, the level will decrease, but in warmer climates it will increase. I would love to see the overall ballance to show the oceans levels will increase by temperature alone.

From what I’ve read, it’s the land-locked ice in Greenland, and a lesser extent Antartica that will increase the ocean levels

But without taking into account the specifics (amount of cold water < 39F, -vs- amount of warm water >39F), the point is incorrect. I would love to see the source of this point.

What does “surface” have to do with it? I’m thinking this is a very valid question as you go lower in the oceans I’d assume the temperature goes lower as well. Water is a pretty decent insulator so it could be 110F at the surface and pretty damn cold a couple hundred feet down.

In short I have no idea what the answer is but I’d think it take alot more than just “Thinking about it” to come up with a correct answer.

In fact a quick google turned this up

There is a boundary between surface waters of the ocean and deeper layers that are not mixed. The boundary usually begins around 100-400 meters and extends several hundred of meters downward from there. This boundary region, where there is a rapid decrease of temperature, is called the thermocline. 90 % of the total volume of ocean is found below the thermocline in the deep ocean. Here, temperatures approach 0 degrees Celsius. So even though surface waters can be a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius (good for swimming in!), the majority of our ocean water has a temperature between 0-3 degrees Celsius (32-37.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

However interesting note from the same page which throughs the initial argument that water is most dense at 39 degrees…

The density of ocean water continuously increases with decreasing temperature until the water freezes. Ocean water, with an average salinity of 35 psu, freezes at -1.94 degrees Celsius (28.5 degrees Fahrenheit)

“I’ll let you think about how much water in the world’s oceans (surface) are at < 4C versus how much water is at > 4C and then revise this statement”

Some calculations: Assuming all the water is at 4C (39F), 15 Billion cubic kms. Is increased to 14C, this 10 degree increase is way more than what GW predicts results in a 0.07% increase in ocean volumes. A 5C increase only increases the volume by 0.02%. A 0.02% increase in volume is a 2.9 million cubic km increase in volume. Sounds like a lot, until you consider that the land-locked volume in Greenland alone is 5.1 million cubic km’s, throw in the 6.3 billion cubic km’s that are land-locked in Antartica, and the increase in level due to the volume change is again minimal.

I think you would like to revise your statement that the ocean levels rise due to the temperature-volume relationship of the water currently in the ocean.

The reason he wasn’t in this case was that he was legally being prevented from doing so.

A major newspaper or magazine should do a large piece on what technologies Gore is or isn’t using. I’d like to know what the real situation is, and I’m too lazy to do a search.

There was a decent piece on Prince Charles’ farms and how he has adopted numerous ecologically friendly practices. A comparison of he and Gore would be interesting.

What about this though…

The density of ocean water continuously increases with decreasing temperature until the water freezes. Ocean water, with an average salinity of 35 psu, freezes at -1.94 degrees Celsius (28.5 degrees Fahrenheit)

It’s because global warming is bullshit. Global warming is the biggest fraud ever perpetrated upon mankind. It’s a fucking lie. If there was any substance to anything about global warming, I would be a follower of the cause. The fact that I do not follow, but rather crusade against the GW gayness is proof that it is bullshit.

For every stupid claim made to support global wamring, I can prove the claim is bullshit ten times over. It’s no big deal. Do not let your mind become infected with the gayness of global warming. Educate yourself and remain strong. For easy reference, search my name and the terms “bullshit”, GW, and “global warming” you will find all you need to know, including answers to your immediate questions.
