Aaaaargh - Workouts and Kids

Has anyone else found this to be the most difficult winter for not getting sick? As of today, I am on my second course of antibiotics and after running 10 miles yesterday with my 3 year old toddler in a jogging stroller I wake up and have another cold! (Probably my third cold, plus flu, plus food poisoning all since Thanksgiving)

Of course, I have four kids under 11 with two toddlers that are at the age that they bring home everything from that germ factory we call a preschool. I’m just ranting because I’ve been trying to get into shape for the LA marathon and I just can’t seem to get in any long runs or any consistency in my workouts because everytime I start to get back into pretty good shape I get something else. Last week it was food poisoning or a 24 hour stomach flu (very unpleasant).

I thinking of throwing in the towel on the LA marathon – with only 2 more weekends to go, I just don’t think 10 miles as my long run is going to cut it. And to make matters worse, I got a new road bike for Christmas and with all the rain out hear lately and my getting sick, I’ve hardly ridden the thing.

OK I’m done with my rant but I cannot wait to get the two youngest out of the toddler stage, its killing me and at 43 it seems that these colds just linger longer then when I was a teenager.

Wow, I could have typed this exact same thing. We have been battling illness on this 2-3 week cycle since thanksgiving. This year was worse than last year for sure.

Yeah, it’s been a bad winter. I don’t know if it was the delay in everyone getting their flu shots or that not enough people ever got them, but it seems everyone we know has been sick a few times since it got cold.

Three kids-- 2, 3, and 5.

My kids have been tag teaming each other all school year. I’ve been really anal about hand washing, general hygiene, etc., and so far I haven;t caught anything. And I sound like a friggin’ broken record! Repeat after me: Cover your mouth when you cough! (repeat a zillion times).

So I feel for you. Have a warm brandy and a cigar and make the best of it.

If you really have cold symptoms, it might be better for you not to be on antibiotics. Obviously you and your doc make the decision, not some guy on the internet, but antibiotics do more harm than good for upper respiratory tract infections, can make you feel worse and prolong your recovery. I’m probably not telling you anything new, but if it gives you a runny nose, it’s a virus and it isn’t going to get better with antibiotics.
