A Surreal Experience

Went for a drive tonight to pick up a few things & the local classic rock station played Lou Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side”. I had the windows down, the volume turned up, and (surprisingly) knew all the words. This song used to be one of my least favorites ever, and here I was enjoying it. Huh? Is there something wrong with me? Must be getting older. Whatever, I relaxed & enjoyed the music.

When the song was over, I was in a parking lot watching people scurrying to & from their cars. I was in a Target parking lot.

(Where they sell Cliff Bars for $5.49/box of 6 and Power Gels for $0.99 each.)

Strange huh? I’ve had the same thing happen where songs I didn’t like as a teen, I think are OK now. I’m getting songs together for my class reunion and have amazed myself at how many of the lyrics I know in a lot of 80’s crap pop and rock songs. Not just the chorus mind you, all the words…

I"ve always liked Walk on the Wild side though, and Lola by the Kinks. Maybe it’s the subject matter that I find interesting.

… and the colored girls go – do, do, do …

… do, do-do, do-do, do, do-do, do, do-do …

Maybe it’s the subject matter that I find interesting

Trannies?

Hmmm. I won’t ask.

They are pretty cool songs. I always loved the sax solo in Walk on the Wild Side. I prefer that one to Lola.

Yeah, trannies…

I think they are both songs that I liked, then actually listened to and figured out the lyrics and laughed.

I also find the opposite occurs- songs that I thought in high school were just the absolute coolest songs and now I can’t stand them.
