I was saddened when visiting a new sports Dr due to an injury I have when in general conversation he suggested that he ‘assists’ several athletes with EPO injections. He suggested that I could visit him twice a week for injections of EPO that would make me fell like superman and allow me to back up day after day.
He said that I could see how I go for 10 weeks and then if I wanted to continue I could.
He also suggested that I should go and have a V02max test so I could monitor my performance over the next few months. He said that if I was serious about qualifying for Kona like his other athletes this was my own way.
I told him I wasn’t interested. Several reasons why.
a/ Mainly the money. It wasn’t cheap.
b/ I am so far off qualifying for Kona even EPO won’t help.
So then it go me wondering if this is just one Dr in Auckland offering EPO, where else is this also going and and for how many people?
It would be best to report this to http://www.drugfreesport.org.nz/ - naming on ST isn’t going to do much but the national body may be able to launch an investigation along with the medical council.
I’m sure you’ll do the wise thing and report him through the appropriate channels…whilst highly entertaining, the consequences of doing so here could be messy. Do the sport a favour, but be smart for your own sake (please)…
Seriously though, a Spanish paper did an investigation where they went to pharmacys and looked to buy EPO without a prescription. All but one sold them EPO…the one that didn’t said they were out, but come back next week when we’re restocked.
I gotta imagine that there are a few doctors out there that get themselves “over the hump” to qualify for Kona with some EPO…and some that provide the service you mentioned for a tidy profit.

Do what is right and report this person to the corresponding authority. Do it even if you have to do it anonimously.
These type of persons should do time in jail and not be just fined.

I call bullsht to what you have stated above.** Mindyou I live on the South Coast of NZ and don’t see many people(3 farm vehicles in the 2hr ride i just finished).
Have been following ‘ST’ and am aware you are from NZ(thought you said you were a lawyer in an earlier thread, but I don’t believe everything written by anonymous people on ‘ST’).
Only looked at this thread because a Dr did offer me EPO on the way to a race I was trying to win for a second year. He had in in the car boot for his mother who had failing kidneys and was only joking. He jokingly offered it to me when I told him the story of being offered anabolic steroids while at the university gym of the town he was from(back in 1989 for rugby).
But really we were quite unanomous that drugs should not be used for boosting sport performance.
Mindyou there will be at least 1000 different guys who will do ironman events from NZ in the next year, so one rogue Dr and several athletes could be possible in JAFFA land. If you are telling the truth then e-mail there names and I will do something about it via the correct channels.
Mindyou my dearly departed gran told me not to ‘grass on people’, so it is not really up to me. You have the evidence so go and see the police about it or go straight to the medical council.
Well I was considering doing IMNZ in 2010 and I don’t want some cheat beating me.

You’re not as sad as we are if you don’t report him/her.
You’re are allowing somebody to practice medicine that you allege is a criminal and you are not doing anything about it???
Please for the sake of sport, for the sake of medicine and for the sake of decency report it to the correct authority as someone else has already told you.
