A serious question: exercise during chemotherapy - any guidance?

Does anyone have any links on the net to or any advice regarding exercising whilst undergoing chemotherapy ? I have a family situation and could do with some guidelines in prescribing treatment mid chemo phase.

Bryce.

Sorry to hear that. Have you read Lance Amstrong book? He describes his rides during his chemo. Try also his ‘Live Strong’ association and ask him directly the question: Lance is a very approachable man when it comes to subjects close to his heart.

Best of luck

Yep, that was the first book I recommended. A quality read.

As I have learned, no one experience with chemo is the same. While it about killed me I had a friend continue light training all the way through her treatments. My benefit though was that I shed 60 lbs. which allowed me to pursue marathoning and tri. Something I couldn’t do before chemo.
God Bless

From family experience (one as an oncologist and one undergoing chemo) it varies greatly from person to person AND treatment to treatment…some treatments minor after effects - others appear to trash for a minimum of a week. Depends on so many different factors…my gut feeling is save the energy to focus on defeating the beast!

Based on a couple of examples that I’m aware of, I think it’s best to skip any structured training and simply follow the volume and intensity that feels right at the time. No sense adding additional stress to the body during chemo. As someone else mentioned, some treatments are more taxing that others.

The oncology Dr should address this with the patient. Some treatment cycles I would not advise it and others moderate/light should be ok. It is all poision and diagnosis dependent. I wish you and your family member good luck. I think the real secret in getting through these situations is outlook and attitude.

Check out www.ridetolive.org its a group of cyclists that have dealt with cancer and its treatments. From what I have seen bicycling does fit in well with chemo treatments but those on that list can surely offer more specific advice.
