A sad day for my cycling shoes - is there redemption?

I’ve had my bulletproof DMT Ultimax cycling shoes for the last 4 years or so. They’ve gotten me through almost all of my races including my one and only Ironman at Coeur d’Alene last year. I knew they were getting old when the sole came apart from the upper part of the shoe, but thanks to shoe goo I managed to keep them afloat for a few more months. Then I decided that maybe I could salvage them for another year by buying and installing a new pair of Speedplay cleats. In the process of removing the old cleats I somehow took out the threaded piece that goes inside the carbon sole on the shoe, but only for 2 out of the 3 holes.

Does anyone have a trick for replacing the threaded part of a cycling shoe? Is there some stealthy website out there that sells threaded inserts that expand inside the sole of the shoe?

I have a new pair of DMT Flash shoes that are great, but having these old faithfuls would be even better.

Is there redemption out there for these shoes?

You might look for some metric T-nuts, and file off the prongs.

When I got my first pair of Look pedals, you still had to drill the shoes yourself and pound these into the top of the sole (not recommended with carbon soles…but those were years away).

Kinda seems not worth the effort though…a proper burial may be in order.

Thanks for the tips, all good stuff. I’m probably going to have to give them up, but I’ll at least try a few things first.

With regard to the JB Weld, do you mean to put that inside in the screw hole to secure the cleat screws or do you mean to secure the threaded part inside the shoe itself? Unfortunately, when I unscrewed the old cleats, the threaded part seems to have dissapeared on a couple of the holes. Probably inside the shoe somewhere.

I was thinking you could use the JB Weld to secure the threaded inserts into the carbon soles. If that stuff won’t hold, nothing will.
