Has anyone seen this new shoe from Skechers? The Shape Ups?
Saw a commercial for it last night. Checked out the webpage today.
Basically its supposed to simulate walking barefoot on a really soft surface. Its got a curved sole that rocks the shoe when you walk, with it looks like about 2" of padding. Its supposed to utilize more muscles than walking with standard shoes.
Their line is “Finally you can get in shape without going to the gym” haha
Don’t know if i’d be able to drop one of my weekly runs from wearing them (kidding), but it may be something to kick around in while at work.
Here is the webpage: http://www.skechers.com/info/shape_ups
What do you all think about the concept? If it actually does strengthen and cross train underused muscles, they may actually have some benefit for injury prevention.
Thought I would share -thought there would be more fellow triathletes that enjoy testing the latest expensive gimmics too.
Rip off of MBT. It’s a way to try and emulate the way the Masai walk. I tried these at the marathon expo in Chicago a couple of years ago. They are unstable. They are probably a good way to sprain an ankle. They have no lateral support. They probably make you use different muscles–whether or not this is a good thing, I’m not sure. As Herb pointed out, they look really stupid, probably worse than the old earth shoes.

I don’t think they look nearly as stupid as the other guys do.
Seems to me they are marketed toward walkers. For that purpose they may be great. They probably work a lot of lower leg muscles that regular shoes don’t. Sounds like they are so soft in the heel that they may be a great option for people with low-back pain.
