A local coach lied to me WTF

Okay, SO I was talking to this coach , I used to be a part of that team but left because i had other goals for myself. A few days ago, I see the coach and he tells me he won the deuces wild 1/2 IM and the xterra race…So, I check results and see that not only did he not win the 1/2, he didnt even win his AG, he got 3rd. Furthermore, it was the same story for the xterra. Just thought I would throw this out there in case he has told anybody else similar shit.

Maybe he was self defining “win”. Come to think of it, that’s not a bad idea.

Back in the 80’s I used to put on a bunch of triathlons, and that would happen all the time. I was also a pretty good racing pro, and I would get these calls from people telling me(the RD, not pro), that I should comp them and give them hotel rooms, because they won so and so race. I made a little game out of it, and would string them along. “So you won the Bakersfield race last month, and that was overall?” “Yes, I won the race”. “Funny, I thought I won that race, but maybe I just imagined it”. “Ugh, I mean I won my AG in the 25-29”. “THat’s funny too, because I thought my buddy won that AG”. Well, Ugh, I mean, I won the fastest bike split in that AG’…“OK, got ya, fastest bike split 25-29. Sorry can’t comp ya this time, maybe next year…” And that would happen dozens of times before each race. I was actually suprised at the gall of some people, but when I considered that most of the time , the person they were talking to would have no clue of what was what, and they would probably get away with it…One of my first lessons about human nature…

From reading your posts, Monty, I’m observing the laws of human nature to be:

  1. People lie
  2. People cheat
  3. People genuinely believe they can outsmart everyone else

I’m sure the rest of the laws will reveal themselves shortly…

Thats hillarious(sp?), this guy really is shameless. he also claims on his website that he is a 10 hour Ironman…is pr is like 10:58, and he says he coaches this local elite marathon female (her website says otherwise) this guy is ridiculous.

Well, he got the 10 part correct.

Heres one more law according to Monty;

Most of the people I meet are genuinely very nice, and even the worst of them I will share a beer with…

At the PlayTri HIM in April I came across the line, and saw two guys who I knew had not been too far in front of me. They were talking, so I walked up and introduced myself. One of them was telling us that he was pretty sure he won. (There was an elite wave, so we were talking AG winner.) Well, we chat, and break up. Later on, the results were posted and he had been DQ’d; all his split times were ridiculous fast, like half the time. Since it was a three loop bike and two loop run, I think he seriously cut the race short.

Seemed very odd to me…

He did indeed get the 10 part correct. but if somebody went 9:58, I would call that a 10 hour ironman, even if he was like 10:29, I could let it slide. but 10:58…thats an 11 hour IM.

Thats F-Ed up, that people cut courses. This guys finish is legit but 5:08 for 3rd AG is not winning.

Rules of human nature:

  1. Beer gives us strength

Im not a fan of people that lie about their results.

Comical story: This dude at the pool tried to convince me that he won overall at this little dinky sprint tri. Ironically, I had won that race.

Really?

If you are in Lubbock this weekend, I’ll be up for that, my treat. Applicable to Monty only.

I know who you are talking about, and apparently there is some confusion. At the Deuces Wild race there was a combination for the fastest COMBINED time for the Half on Saturday and the Xterra on Sunday. He won the award for that. So technically, he won for both races.

He is rather, er…, self confident, but I don’t think he needs to be completely raked over the coals for that particular brag. I don’t know him well, but he seems to be the type that will round a number to his benefit but I don’t think he would claim he won something that he clear did not win.

I know who you’re talkin about too; briefly looked at having him coach me this season- asked around about his reputation and that turned me off- his wife is really nice though

Oh snap! My PR is 10:42, so I can I claim 9:45? Suh-weet!

He has a bad rep for sure, I can steer you towards a much better coach if you are interested.

While I agree with you, “technically” I do not believe he is incorrect…
