Due to poor planning on my part I’ll be flying into Halifax and then driving/ferrying 9 hours up to Corner Brook. Who all is in and how many are staying at the host hotel?
I’m also taking the ferry from North Sydney and staying in Corner Brook. Which ferry are you taking? We are going up a bit early and taking the Wednesday afternoon ferry.
Most likely the 0200 one Saturday morning as I get to Halifax Friday afternoon but can’t make the 1700 ferry that day. I’m hoping to catch some z’s on the ferry ride so I’ll be rested on Saturday.
I’m heading down from Ottawa Wednesday morning. Overnight somewhere in NB. Taking the Thursday night/Friday morning 0100 Ferry. Should be at my parents place in Corner Brook for brunch on Friday.
Note to anyone putting a car on the ferry. Have a reservation: www.marine-atlantic.ca . During the summer tourist season it can get very backed up, and you could wait a day or more.
AndrewSaar: I would not bank on getting much sleep on the ferry ride unless you have booked a cabin. It is a fairly short ride (4 to 6 hours). There are some quieter areas but it can be loud and the crossing can be rough (but not usually in the summer)
If you have any questions about the area, feel free to ask. I lived there for 20 years, and visit at least once a year.

I’m taking the ferry next Wednesday afternoon, get in to Port-aux-Basques at about midnight (I hope). I’ve never been to Newfoundland before, so I’ll be doing some sightseeing in the days leading up to the race.
I’m staying at the Glynmill Inn.
I’ll be there, flying out of Vancouver on a red-eye Weds night to Toronto, then to Saint Johns, then to Deer Lake. Staying at a B&B while in Cornerbrook, flying to Saint Johns on Monday after the race for a couple of days of fun!. Any truth to the rumour that the aid stations will be serving Newfie Screech?!.
Only if you kiss a cod.
OK, I’ll bite. What’s Newfie Screech? Tim

.
I visited the island back in 1989 as a tourist and hope to get back that way next summer for the half iron man tri. If I do I will ask for this drink by name. Tim
Anyone know how many entries there is?
This posting has gotten me thinking that this race may be an awesome vacation/race destination for next year. I’d love to see some race reports and feedback about the event when you guys are finished.
There will definitely be an RR from me on it and I’m sure others will jump in as well.
Looks like around 300 entered along with some big name Pro’s, ie: Craig Alexander. 30 in my AG and 7 spots for the World Champs.
Yeah it should be a lot of fun to have such a small crowd. Not too many worries about drafting on the bike I’d guess. ![]()
I think there are 36 or so in my AG (I did the count earlier today). Woo hoo.
I’ll still need to have a pretty good race to qualify for world champs though.
Pretty serious line-up for the Pro men, with Craig Alexander, someguy name Bjorn, Kieran Doe, Pete Jacobs, Dave Harju, etc. Rode this course about 200 times over the last 5yrs, each 45km lap is about 35km of down in the bars riding and 10kms of longish climbs/rollers. Expect strong headwinds on the out sections from T1 towards Corner Brook…as well the descent after the bike turnaround is very FAST, be very aware of other riders and crosswinds.
Allan: I was thinking the *exact *same thing. Hubby has always wanted to go there, so a great way to convince him me doing a HIM would be a good idea.
Plus, I see there’s a *very *generous cut off time (9hrs) and for a slowpoke like me it gives me some peace of mind. And bonus, the temps generally are on the low side!
I eagerly await race reports!
the temps are the primary consideration for me for this race. Steelhead was held in the center of the sun last year (ok, for a Clydes 88 heat index seemed like center of the sun, cannot image what a REAL hot race would be like) ![]()
Didn’t know about 9 hour cutoff. Luckily, no concern here, but still it shows they’re trying to draw a crowd.
Too bad no clydes division or I might just hop a plane this year ![]()
forecast is for 60freaking degrees HIGH
O-M-G THAT WOULD SO FREAKIN ROCK!!!
That is SO my weather.
