A buddy of mine is having calf problems

No, he’s not a cow farmer! He’s not a triathlete, but has just started running after a long layoff, and I told him that the armchair docs (and real ones) here on ST would throw down their diagnoses of this problem. So, have at it and let me know what you think:

So here is my calf description:

About 2 months ago I began to feel an unusual tenderness and soreness
in the center of my right calf. I had been running 2-3 miles every
other day on a dirt track, and thought it might be because of the
running in a continuous loop. So I changed directions, and started
running a 3 mile course around my neighborhood. That didn’t help, and
now the muscle is very tender when I walk, and is sore when I run,
however as my calf warms up and is stretched out, the pain is
temporarily alleviated until I get to the end of my run when I am tired.
I have tried stretching daily and giving it rest but it did not seem
to help. Any ideas???

I have had calf problems in the past as well. I had to rest about 6 weeks. I started back slow. What has really helped me is ART. I see my chiro about every three weeks during the season for tune up ART. It has help a lot.

Im not a doctor, I would say though, be careful and rest it, I had a nasty case of achilles Tendinitis flare up while trying to run through similar calf pain. I dont know if the tightness of the calf somehow helped the AT flare up, but when I went in for ART, they fixed it by working my soleous (sp?) and asked me if I had been running with calf pain…

Bump for the morning crowd…
