My mom still says to this day that I am Calvin!
The sad thing is that the people who have window stickers of Calvin peeing on a Ford or Chevy logo - for the most part - have NO IDEA who he was, and couldn’t grasp the humor anyway.

Mom: “Baked monkey skulls, why?”

Dad: “How did you ever get Calvin to eat stuffed peppers?”
We talka bout that all the time. The Calvin pissing thing really is tasteless.

My favourite was the one where the phone rings, Calvin answers.
Voice on the other end: “Is your dad home?”
Calvin: “No”
Voice: “Can you take a message?”
Calvin: “hold on, I have to get a pen”
Calvin goes and gets a paper bag, blows it up, then pops it and screams: “AUGH! I’ve been shot!” He then hangs up the phone and walks away.
Wait, what? First you said the DFP is printing old C&H strips? AND they’re running BC on Sundays??? Is this for real?
I remember reading the last C&H. I have the past Bloom County tucked away nicely in a drawer.
Today’s comic strips just don’t do it any more. No C&H, no BC, no Far Side… 
mind telling how you got into this prized possession? I would kill for that file…

I can’t remember where I read it, but I remember seeing an article where it talked about how much he hated the commercialization of comic book characters. It went on to say that he turned down VERY lucrative deals with stuffed animal companies to create an ‘official’ Hobbes stuffed tiger.
To my knowledge, Bill Waterson has never authorized the use of Calvin and Hobbes (or their images) for anything. So all these peeing Calvins you see on the back of pick-up trucks (which, by the way I find as the ultimate in vulgarity and childishness of adults - how can you tell your kids to have manners when you have garbage like that on your car bumper?) are not authorized by him. Evidently, he used to go after people marketing this stuff in court, but finally gave up.

My wife does as well … in fact she even says my DAUGHTER is Calvin!!! Apparently “Calvin” is an attitude … with no regard to age or gender.
I read that too. Lots of respect to Bill Watterson for his principles.
Good on him for demanding his privacy, if that’s what he wanted. I hope he’s sitting by a lake, fishing, painting and maybe even cycling.
I love Calvin & Hobbes and have quite a few of the books, and even two of them in French… some of the translations are hilarious. One of my favourite strips is where he takes a photo of Hobbes just before he gets cleaned up by him at the front door, as proof that that’s what happens every day. Of course, in the photo Hobbes is in “stuffed tiger” look !!
I think we all have a bit of Calvin in us.
PS - Bill Watterson looks exactly like Calvin’s Dad !!

I believe he and Hobbes had just rocketed off a hill in their wagon and were falling through the air when Calvin says,
“Change is Invigorating! If you don’t accept new challenges, you become complacent and lazy. Your life atrophies. New experiences lead to new questions and new solutions. Change forces us to experiment and adapt. That’s how we learn and grow.”

Calvin and Hobbes is the best and I’m psyched that the Boston Globe has recently added old Calvin and Hobbes strips to the daily comics section. Besides Get Fuzzy, it’s the only one I read. The snowmen ones are classics - my favorite is the one with a snowman pinned under his dad’s car (the snowman’s head has rolled off) and all the other snowmen reacting in horror, with Calvin’s dad saying to his mom “We really should consider putting him in therapy”.
post it up here when you get it…I’m sure I’m not the only one who would love to see it.
It’s good to know that I’m not the only one who misses Calvin & Hobbes. The childhood escapism inherent in Spaceman Spiff and Stupendous Man always struck a chord with me.

A few weeks ago I gave my wife my Xmas list. Only thing on it was the new 3 volume collection.
Reading Amazon reviews of the book and people’s favorite strips reminded me how much I miss the strip.
I even love the basis of the names, Calvin after John Calvin and Hobbes after Thomas Hobbes (who had a not-so-great view of human nature).
