With this being my first *serious *year doing multi-sport, I upgraded from a Garmin Forerunner 305 to a 310xt and received a Garmin Swim as a bday gift. So basically, I’m wearing two different watches at different times. I use the 310xt for my morning runs and rides and use the Garmin Swim for my pool sessions and daily wear. My question is, does it make more sense to sell the 310x and Garmin Wwim and purchase the do-it-all 910xt or is the difference so small that it doesn’t matter. Obviously in a race, I’ll have to wear the 310xt if I want to capture everything, but is the 910xt that much better than it makes sense to just get it instead of having multiple watches? Budget isn’t really an issue here, but I’m just trying to figure out if it’s worth the purchase or if I’m being a dum dum.
The pluses for my current setup are basically that it’s been working for months, so if it ain’t broken don’t fix it and, I can actually wear the Garmin Swim around like a regular watch since it doesn’t need to be recharged like the Forerunners. That’s all I got, folks.
My vote is for Garmin Swim + 510 for the bike + 210 for the run.
Currently have a Swim, 510, and 310. Each sport-specific device is better than the all-in-one. If I did more open water swims in training, I may consider the 910, but I usually just stick the 310 in my cap.
When racing, I don’t wear anything on the swim, leave the 510 on my bike, and put on the 310 for the run.
I have the 910xt and never had a 310xt, but I would keep your current setup because of the garmin swim as your daily watch. If you get the 910xt, you still need to solve the daily watch issue.
So, keep the current setup and save the $300-400 for another upgrade.

I reckon you’ve got a decent setup. Like somebody else has mentioned probably only a dedicated bike computer - 500 or 510 - would improve it dramatically.
The swim is better than the 910 for lap swimming, I don’t think the 910 has a drill mode yet?
There’s very little that a dedicated running watch or the 910 would add that the 310 can’t do. I use an Edge 500, a 310 and a Swim and that covers virtually all the bases.
Forgot to mention I have a 500 for bike only when I’m going on long rides, and cycling specific rides (i.e. not doing a brick workout). Thanks for all of the replies everybody, you saved me from spending $400 unnecessarily.

x2. Had the 310 and still do but just can’t get over how ugly the watch is. The 910 isn’t any better looking. Also, ended up getting a bike specific computer anyway because easy dislay and more metrics on one screen
Right now I have the above setup except I have the Garmin 620 instead of 210.
I had the swim + 310xt until the 310xt died. Upgraded to a 910xt. I think I’ve worn the 910 in a swimming pool maybe twice (both sprint tri’s with a pool swim). otherwise, ALWAYS wear the garmin swim. I wouldn’t spend anymore money given your current setup. The only other feature that is supposed to be nice with the 910xt is barometric altimeter, but my experience has been that it isn’t very good and I almost always do an elevation correction when importing to strava or sportstracks.
I also have the 310 XT, Garmin Swim, and the Edge 510 for the bike. Love this set up. Strongly recommend it. Also considered the 910, but I love what I have and would not change. The swim seems reasonably priced, and I got the 310XT on Black Friday. If one of them has a problem, I like that I can replace it, and not have everything all wrapped up in one expensive device.
My 910 is such a piece of junk, I finally bought a Swim so,I could have a reliable lap counter. It also does such a poor job of counting distance on my trail runs, I use my wife’s 310 now. I wish I could sell some sucker my 910.

Jeff, if you are having problems with your 910 I’d suggest contacting Garmin. I was having elevation issues with mine a few months ago. I couldn’t take it after a while so I called and they shipped me a new one even though my warranty had expired.
Recently got rid of my Swim. I’ve been on the same 910 with mostly daily pool/run use for going on a couple years now and have had zero issues. It just works great.

Does the 910 now have a drill mode? I know there was some discussion that it might be added. Like the OP, I use the 310XT + Swim. This works great for my tri training.
No. Actually I didn’t really use the drill mode on the Swim personally. I much preferred the 910’s distance/time alerts, which the Swim lacks for some reason.
