You guys are going to kill the east with Forsburg (sp?). I think we have a decent team in Ottawa, but our 40 year old fragile goalie Hasek is very suspect. One wrong move and his groin comes off…
Back in the '71 or '72, living in Maine, if I was lucky I could pick up Flyers broadcasts on the radio. These were sponsored by Tastee (sp?) Cakes, and the announcers were Gene Hart and Eddie Zeidel - if I remember the names correctly. They were real homers, and I loved them. Zeidel somehow emerged from a long career as an AHL thug to become a fairly amusing commentator. He was perfect for those early days of the Broad Street Bullies!
Of Steve Coates, I know nothing. Does he compare in any favorable way with Hart and Zeidel?

We went to a birthday party last Saturday at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. My car was broken so D’Wife dropped Mariel and I off (she had work stuuf to do and would pick us up later). As we pulled in front, the Hockey Groupies were hanging outside. A tall black haired guy was walking his dog into the SZ.
“What and asshole, bringing his dog to a birthday party.”
“Um, honey that’s a Flyer. They probably had a shoot-around today, because they have a game tonight”
“What’s a shoot around???”
“Like half-practice. He might have finished early”
“Well he’s acting like he owns the place.”
“Um, he kinda does. The Flyers OWN the Skate Zone.”
It was Chris Therien.
Later, as the Phantoms - I thought it was the Phantoms, even though they had Flyers practices jerseys on - were finishing up, Mariel was standing on the bench right on the goal line. With a pink sweatshirt and top-knot pony tail, she was looking her Cindy Lou Who best. One of the the Phantoms started showing off for her, passing behind his back, diving into the boards, running into the goalie and such. He tried several times to flip a puck over the glass between the net but failed repeatedly. He finally took the whole bucket of pucks of the ice and handed them to the other kids, most of whom where by the door. He only hand one left when he got to my daughter.
“I especially want you to have one cuite.”
It was Pat Sharp. He just happened to be practicing with the Phantoms.
“Let’s go Flyers and let’s go Gene Hart!!!”
My boss just married Gene Hart’s daughter Lauren. If I hear any hockey talk I am going to check them all into the boards.
I dont get the sport. They all look alike to me, white guys with mullets and helmets. As soon as I figure out who is on the ice they switch lines.
But I can tell you many of the riders for Euskatel and I know the difference between a c-40 and a c-40hp.
Despite having Facenda and Kalas in Philadelphia, the one voice that I loved was Dave Zinkoff. I miss that guy!

What are you talking about??? According to Coatesy, the Flyers haven’t committed a penalty since 1979. The refs are just out to get the Orange and Black!! He’s still better than “Wheels” on the Phillies broadcasts…
Philly has had some of the best play by play guys… Harry Kalas, Merrill Reese, and Gene Hart are all legends… but some of the worst color guys. Wheeler, Coates, and I cringe when I listen to Mike Quick on Eagles broadcasts… I still miss Stan Wolters!!

There’s only one problem with that: Bob Roll actually understand the sport that he discusses. Bob could probably announce the Flyers better than Coates, too. I’ll take Dornhoefer over Steve Coates any day of the week. Hopefully a lot of the Flyers games will be on OLN so I don’t have to hear him.
