808 (2008) v 808 (2009)

Reviewing Zipp 808’s I’m trying to decide between 808’s 2008 or the new 09. I know the tubulars were redesigned by I am looking at clinchers. From what I can see the spoke count is different, weight slightly different but nothing too major that would warrant the extra $$$ for 09’s. Interseting that there are less spokes on 09 but they weigh more so I must be missing something.

Has anyone used the 09 808’s and are there any major changes on the clinchers.

Many thanks

I was under the impression that the only difference is the new hubs…

the lacing pattern is different as well.

Yep, on the spec the rear hub is 188 for 09 and 182 for 08 version so there must be a change there. Anyone know what makes the new hub bettter?

The new hubs are a significant change from the previous ones. I would suggest this change is a tangible upgrade; specifically, the new dust caps do a better job of remaining in place than the older carbon fiber versions.

The previous dust caps used a rubber “O” ring on the inside of the cap that sat in a recessed groove on the axle. The “O” ring frequently migrated out of grove aloowing the carbon dust cap to move, rattle or otherwise fail. With the new configuration the dust cap is allow and clamped in place by a miniature bolt.

As a result, the small gap between the previous (2008) carbon fiber dust cap and the hub shell is now gone and the new seal is complete and seems more reliable.

Additionally, the rim is a new profile claimed to be more aerodynamic.

Overall the changes to the Zipp wheels include the new hub configuration, the new rim profile and these changes both appear to be adaptations based on Zipp’s previous experience with their products and are likely a worthwhile upgrade.

And the new rim profile:

Additionally, There was a tendency on previous Zipp wheels to have an appearance of small lines eminating from the dimples. People sometimes commented that these may be small “cracks” (they weren’t). This cosmetic issue created more than its share of concern. As a result the wheels have been changed to eliminate these small lines:

Hi,

Clincher rims are the same for 09. As Tommy D states, the hubs and resultant spoke pattern are completely new and improved.

Crashing economy has left many 08 sets on sale.

I guess the choice is price vs new and improved

Thanks Tom

Great information as always. I’m sold on the 09’s.
