Watching the Giro Stage 1 coverage, and they were talking about the BMC guys wearing booties that save 8-10 watts. Ridiculous or possible? Seems unlikely to me.

Only if their cycling shoes look like this…

Other than that, 8-10 watts from using booties seems optimistic.
Brad
I would totally wear those.
Quite the opposite. If I get any booty right before (or during) a race, my watts go way down. Perhaps it’s the dehydration?
I would ride more if cycling shoes looked like that. And felt like that.

its all in your head
I think it’s a very shoe-dependent thing. BMC racing doesn’t seem to have a specific shoe sponsor, and so I assume the riders choose what shoes they want to wear (Cadel Evans wears Gaerne; George Hincapie wears Northwave).
8-10W could be for shoes with more stuff on them; the buckles and stuff, but I really don’t think shoe covers really make that much of a difference; you’d have to worry about the additional rotating weight with the shoe covers on.

The thread is clear. Booties.
More then one!
I think he meant to say the skinsuit and bootie combination
.

Sigh…
No.
I’ve seen some “interesting” power numbers in the past couple of months. Speed play advertised something like 10watts…for pedals…
…although when I use my snowboard boots with ductape to platforms, it does slow me down a little.
Seems a little high but might be possible. I know from back calculating CdA one of my friends can tell the difference between unzipped and zipped booties on a calm day just from the power and gps data.

most teams don’t have a shoe sponsor, riders themselves have contracts with shoes companies. The same goes for sunglasses, MOST riders have their own contract with a particular company.

Cadel used to wear Gaerne, now he wears Diadora.
