I am putting my original post in a new thread so this one can keep playing out, I am curious how 70.3 and Kona slots will be distributed.
This is easy. Just take your qualifying spot, assuming you get one, which you should, and make your end of season goal the 70.3 World championship in November. That way you have two distinct seasons and go back into a good cycle for the second half of the season.
I was really happy to see them offer a championship at Half-Iron distance. The USAT “national championship” at the Half-Iron distance lacked any real teeth because it was just a race that you can apply for and show up to race. If you are looking for good competition then Eagleman is a good race (assuming it doesn’t bother you that people draft like crazy). It was far from my favorite race for many reasons, but it is still early enough in the season that the people who worship at Kona are still trying to qualify and that brings out some fast people.

Timberman in late August or the Diamondman in early September. Both are 1/2’s and Timberman is part of the 70.3 series if you’re trying to qualify.
Thanks for the encouragement, now assuming I don’t qualify, anyone else have any suggestions?
Also, since CDW has put the thought in my head, will their be Kona spots as well as 70.3 WC Spots and spots to IM LP FL and MOO? How do they prioritize these? That seems like lots of spots being given out, it could be worth staying for the roll-down.
Yes, I read that there are Kona spots. You are missing the point, though. The idea is to get away from have to go to Kona to worship. “Just say no,” to Ironman. ![]()
I suspect the competition for any spots might be quite fierce because they will be for the next year and all those people who just finished IM Hawaii will be trying to get back again.

The scenario will probably be something like
while there are more Kona or 70.3 slots available for this age group
candidate is next highest finisher
if candidate wants available Kona slot
give candidate Kona slot
else
if candidate wants available 70.3 slot
give candidate 70.3 slot
else
if candidate wants an available IM slot
give candidate IM slot
if no more candidates, roll slots to another age group
After all awards have been given out, anyone who is still around will be offered the IM slots. Last year, just about anyone who wanted one got one.
Don’t get me wrong, I would be happy to qualify for anything. Any idea on how many slots for the 70.3 WC there will be? How does this work? Kona slot goes to AG winner, then a 70.3 slot or two goes to 2 and 3rd and slots to LP FL and MOO go to the people after them?
Also, this is all getting ahead of myself, let’s assume I don’t qualify for anything, I need some training advice.
So you think it just starts with the age-group winner and rolls down from there and you get to choose what you want assuming it is available? I know the Kona slots and I am assuming the 70.3 slots would be for that years championships. Is this accurate? When are the 70.3 championships? Will there be more slots for that then for Kona?
I don’t think I would even take an IM slot, could have signed up if I wanted to do one, but if I qualified for something, well that could be different…

Yes, that is how I think it will be done. I doubt they’ll let anyone take two slots, but I could be mistaken about that: after all, it is a qualifier for Kona and the 70.3 championships. All slots are for the 2006 championships; the 70.3 championships are in November, I think. There are 30 Kona slots, 10 slots each for IMs LP, FL, WI, and 100 slots for 70.3.
You might want to go to www.tricolumbia.org for information…
Weren’t you the guy that swam like, 16 minutes for 1500 in college and ran a 34ish 10K off a few miles per week? You have the talent; now it is time to work. Volume, volume and more volume. It is so simple you don’t really need a coach, just lots of time.

Thanks for your input it makes sense. I look at the Tri Columbia page but couldn’t find anything about 70.3 spots. As I said, I am not really interested in a LP FL or WI spot because if I wanted to do one of them I would have just signed up. And I would be willing to bet that Kona still holds more appeal than the 70.3 WC in Clearwater for most people. So that leaves 100 slots to the 70.3 WC, that seems like a lot, any idea how the age-group breakdown will work? Thanks again.
Hey gang …
An athlete will be able to take an IM spot & 70.3 spot at the same race (2 different championships) … In 2006 Blackwater, Bufalo Springs, Vineman will have 30 IM spots & 100 70.3 spots, California Half will have 20? + 100, these are the only 3 races where you’ll see this scenario. If i am not mistaken there will be some Hawaii spots at the 2006 70.3 WC race qualifying athletes for the 2007 IMWC
70.3 WC are NOV 11, 2006 in Clearwater Fla.
Any idea of the age-group breakdown for the 100 spots to Clearwater for the 70.3 WC?
Slot breakdown will be run identical to the way a race with 100 IM spots works … take a look at a race that has 100 IM spots and look at their breakdown. The 100 spots @ UK 70.3 were apparently gobbled up in no time!

You do the math.
Dave,
Know anything about IM North America slots at the se same three races?
Multiply by about 3 you think? Is that a safe assumption?
Avoid the Dannonman 70.3. Event is being run by Bill Burke/PEM. Statewide boycott of his organization due to safety concerns and unethical conduct.
Hey Kevin … Vineman does not offer IMNA spots, my guess is California Half (an IMNA race) has some, Blackwater has some for IMLP, WISCO, & IMFLA, and not sure if Lubbock usess them any longer. Most peoples experience seems to be that those who want one of those spots seem to get them quite easily.
Need more detail. I personally know Bill and would find it hard to believe if he actually controls something that it would be unethical.
