70.3 Races get NA Ironman Spots

That’s another 100 spots for CdA, 125 spots for Canada, Wisconsin, Louisville, Florida and Arizona. Lake Placid will have another 250 spots available at select 70.3 races. That would bring the registered field to around 2900 for IMLP. I would imagine it would not be too difficult to grab a spot at Rhode Island since it is only 2 weeks before the race.

WTC Press Release
World Triathlon Corporation is pleased to announce that select Ironman 70.3 races will feature entry spots for Ironman events in North America. In addition, Ironman Community Foundation slots are still available for Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene, Ford Ironman Lake Placid, Subaru Ironman Canada, Ford Ironman Louisville, Ford Ironman Wisconsin, Ford Ironman Florida and Ford Ironman Arizona. All of these events have already reached capacity and are closed to general entry for 2009. At this year’s Ironman 70.3 California, Ironman 70.3 Florida, Ironman 70.3 Hawaii and Ironman 70.3 Boise there will be 25 entries available to participating athletes for Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene, Subaru Ironman Canada, Ford Ironman Louisville, Ford Ironman Wisconsin, Ford Ironman Florida and Ford Ironman Arizona. Additionally, each of the events will encompass 50 entry slots for the 2009 Ford Ironman Lake Placid. Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island will have the same number of entry slots to all events except Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene. http://ironman.com/mediacenter/pressreleases/qualifying-and-community-foundation-slots-still-available-for-ironman-events-in-north-america

sittin’ here thinkin’ it would be nice if they threw a few slots in the direction of Augusta 70.3
.

It looks like the only races that got slots are actual WTC owned and operated races.

If all the general entry capacities have been reached for the full IMs, why are they coming out with more slots to them at the Halfs? Maybe they can’t fill the Halfs? Maybe they just want to over book these events and make even more money? Is this a sign of some sort that the general problems of the economy have trickled down to the big red IM dot? Tim

I equate it to a hotel or airline overbooking. There are always going to be no-shows.

I wonder if they are seeing more cancellations this year than in past years and figure they can handle more.

they do this every year
.

So what’s the procedure for getting a slot then? I wouldn’t mind getting one since I will be at the FL 70.3.

hang around for the awards ceremony - usually they do it afterwards. if there are fewer number of people than slots available for a certain race, everyone gets a slot. if more, i’m not sure how they dole them out. bring your checkbook as you’ll have to pay on the spot for the IM you sign up for (at least, that’s how they did it a few years ago).

I heard, but can’t say for sure, that at Calif 70.3 last year they were basically accepting applications/money from anyone who wanted an entry into CDA or Wisconsin. It states in the Athlete Guide that they do a “roll down” for these events at Calif 70.3 but apparently there weren’t a lot of takers last year and they were just taking apps from anyone.

This has been the best-kept secret for a long time! I got into IMFL in 2006 and IMC in 2007 by taking slots at the California 70.3. As others have said, you just have to have check book in hand and wait around until after the awards are done. When I took my IMFL slot, only a few people wanted one of the 50 slots they had. IMC in '07 was a bit tighter, but still there were only 50 people that wanted the slots, so we all got one, regardless of our finish time. The key is you have to FINISH the 70.3 to be eligible for the full IM slots and have your payment ready to go!

less than 50 took slots at for all available at FL 70.3 last year. but, the way i read it, there is only gonna be 25 available for each full IM. so, that would make finish time important. guess I gotta rest a bit for the race! darnit! I was gonna train right through.
