I really have nothing to add, just watch…
That was absolutely mesmerizing.
What’s with the mass start situation? Talk about recipe for disaster. And why… why are those guys charging head first into breaking waves just to get taken out and swept out to shore?
That was absolutely mesmerizing.
But not at all surprising.

I ask myself the same thing whenever I’m surfing an out of the way spot and 4 guys on SUPs paddle past several good breaks to get to where I am.
And why… why are those guys charging head first into breaking waves just to get taken out and swept out to shore?
I see it all the time (although not usually on such a mass scale). These are the “watermen” I am faced with far to often.
People don’t really understand my “issue” with SUPers. This video is just a condensed version of what I see in small doses all the time.
I don’t get it.
Several weeks ago, either you posted, or someone posted on a thread which involved you, a great video of some dude surfing a tunnel or tube or whatever you call it. That is cool stuff. I can’t surf, but watching it is cool.
This video shows people falling down. I quit 1:30 into it. Is that some beginner school? Seems that those people should be inland on flat water.
Is it me or did they all look like they are trying to pound nails with a screwdriver?
Wrong tool for the job.
I don’t get it.
Yes you do. See below.
Is that some beginner school?
No. It was a race. With people who “trained” for it. These are “skilled” SUPers. Seriously.

See. You get it.

Yeah, they’re using SUPs. They should be at home watching football or reading Outside Magazine.

No way those are skilled people. You can just tell. I don’t surf, but I snowboard decently enough. You know when people are fighting it and when people are nice and fluid.
Watch the vast majority of them, then watch the dude at 5:14. That guy seems to be a few cuts above the rest. Most of those people look like they’ve never SUP’ed in the ocean or been around waves before.
Mayhem
.
Looks like a lot of fun!
Yeah…I’ve been thinking about getting into SUP but always picture myself cruising around on lakes around the midwest…and I’ll probably be falling down just as much as these folks who are for some reason charging their way headfirst into waves.
Hell of a spectator sport on saltwater. I was watching it thinking why are they cheering for getting 10ft into the ocean…would I “get it” if I were into the sport and really understood how hard that was? Nope…I would probably be off down the beach trying to fall down farther into the water farther instead of getting all amped up for this.
I don’t get it.

From the Sports Illustrated article about that race…
“The Battle of the Paddle, the world’s premier stand up paddleboard event took place this past weekend at Salt Creek Beach in Southern California.”
Here’s a link to a SUP forum discussing a collision between “Kai and Conner”…
http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,25326.0.html
When watch the video keep in mind that Kai and Conner are *professional *SUPers.
If you have time you should browse that forum. You’ll come to understand why I purge SUPers from the surf zone with regularity.
A quote I found from someone commenting on the video…
“Very difficult sport overall, SUP racing, takes a tremendous amount of stamina and training. In those conditions also quite dangerous, as the video shows. Shouldn’t have been held there in those conditions, but the skill and sportsmanship of the athletes does not deserve to be diminished.”
And in this video at 2:55 you see a lady commit the most basic (and very very dangerous) error of placing her boat between herself and on coming wave (then apparently throws a temper tantrum at the lifeguard trying to help her).

Now dealing with less than skilled surfers in the lineup is one thing. They are paddling with their hands, largely predictable, tire quickly, generally have good etiquette and can’t catch every single fucking wave that comes through. It’s a whole other issue when someone like what you see in these videos comes barreling through the lineup on a 40-50 lb boat and six foot long carbon fiber blade.
BTW, that video posted a while back of Laird kicking out under the Malibu Pier… earlier on that same wave he ran a guy over and broke his arm. He paddled back out and helped the guy get the beach, then gets on the news… “Laird Rescues Man at Malibu” is the story. No joke.
People keep refering to this as a “race”. A race has a starting point and an end point. All I see is people going out into the surf and attempting to surf on SUPs. What is the “race”?

Even on the front page of their own website they show people running each other over.
I got so much shit for my “SUP hate”. Everyone needs to just look at this shit.
From the race website…

These people bring this same shit to surf lineups.
Ok. I get that those folks can make surfing a pain. But you usually post entertaining stuff.
I have a suggestion to help you. Go to that SUP forum and post a link to THIS. Once they see it they leave their SUPboards behind and take up a new sport.
That looked like so much fun.
Come on duffy, you know these are race boards, no rocker, narrow, etc, they handle like shit. Even more so in waves, especially hurricane simon waves.
That being said, Salt Creek is my home break. There were so many stupid SUP’rs, basically the whole beach and parking lot was closed for the whole weekend. So frustrating that they got the whole thing. Every year prior to this one was held at Doheny Beach which was perfect.
I basically had only a limited time to surf and couldn’t because of this stupid race. ERRRRRGGGH!
SUP sucks!
I’m doing my best to “regulate” this without getting the law involved but sometimes it seems I’m the only one who “stands up” to these kooks.
LOL!!! Janitors in surf! Oh the humanity!!!
