7 Continents

I know there is the 7 Continents Marathon challenege…but is there a 7 Continent Triathlon challenge? I imagine the logistical aspect of doing a tri in Antarctica would be quite difficult in terms of the swim, but it’s got to be doable right?

You can swim in Antarctica. There are open rocky beaches. Cycling would be the most difficult.

i respectfully disagree. a fat-tire bike would ride around very easily. swimming in sub-zero water (it’s so saline at the south pole that the water can actually go below zero without freezing) would be . . . tricky.

I’ve never been there, however I have two friends who gave been. One lived there for 2 months, the other was there for a day. Both got in the water. Lots of people have. I agree that a fat tire bike makes it possible, I still think it would be more difficult than swimming there.

I was thinking the same thing; that a fat bike would work perfectly and the swim would be tough. But it seems that if you just treated the Antarctica race as a sprint, you would maybe not die from the swimming haha!

If I remember correctly the Antarctic marathon is conducted on a treadmill. Following through on this the bike could be done on a trainer so no problems. If there is an infinity pool somewhere in Antartica you are good to go. Otherwise the swim will be a huge problem. There is a big difference between going for a dip in sub-0 conditions and trying to swim in them.

I’m assuming some of that should be in pink. I have no idea when it comes to swimming in cold water, but I feel like the human body could handle 10-15 of ‘swimming’, in 0 degree water with thick wetsuit, booties, gloves and head gear. Am I an idiot for thinking this?

The Last Desert, 7 days, 250KM, outdoors on Antarctica. Definitely not a treadmill  http://www.4deserts.com/thelastdesert/

Dry suit, fat bike and trail run it would be doable.

No problem. WTC puts on Ironman Antarctica and then promptly cancels the swim due to unsafe conditions, cancels the bike due to excessive wind, and shortens the run to a 5k. You are still an ironman!!!

Thanks Rodney! Your belief makes me happy haha. I’m totally convinced it’s possible

$12,000 entry fee  Possible? Yes! Pricey? Hell yes!

Forget that 4Deserts thing, I’ve got my own thing in mind

Marathon is also not on a treadmill:

Having done all 3 sports at McMurdo station I will say this. Polar plunge (water is 28.6 degrees) froze my nuts for a week. Bike…you could get a bike from the activites locker and take it out for a spin. There were enough “roads” that you could ride about 15 miles round trip. Running was easy. They have Scotts Hut race down there along with some other road races. You can run some of the “trails” that are in the snow as well.

The hard part would be to find water that didn’t have so many orca’s and sea lions. I am sure you just look like a big penguin to them!

nah, you don’t need a wetsuit, ya pussy
