i’m stalking ebay for some a crank for my bike, going from compact to standard, and am wondering if it’s best to get an older 7800 or get a brand new 6700 crank
.
Emotional thoughts: Both look equally as awesome.
Technical thoughts: See emotional thoughts.
i would think the 6700 is better with out a doudt and maybe cheaper

7800 has an old school look to it. The 6700 looks better, and performs every bit as good as the 7800, plus it’s likely cheaper.
If you’re a set-it-&-forget-it type, then it’s a push, but if you’re a tinkerer, the newest generation of Shimano cranks won’t take other rings very well should you decide to change it up with anything different. The bolt circle will still fit, but the faces where they meet the spider arms aren’t flat anymore since they bolt from the back side, so cosmetically that will limit your options.
Whichever is cheaper…
I prefer the look of the 7800 series…
the arrow shape is just wrong to me (but I’m a sram fanboy, so don’t listen to me!)
I have 7800 on my tri bike and 6700 on my road bike. The 7800 is excellent. The 6700 is better. But these are complete groupsets, not just the crank. I don’t know how well they work in mixed environments.
i have 7800 rd, fd, so i’m not really concerned about compatibility

aside from a few grams of weight difference it doesn’t matter at all

I wasnt talking about compatibility. More about how well they work together. Of course the 7800 derailleur will shift quite well with a 6700 crank. But with a complete groupset – at least from Shimano – the whole really is more than the sum of the parts. There is something exta… “good” (for lack of a better word) in how they all seem to work together. Not something you can distinguish after 1 shift or 10 shifts but after a ride or two, the whole of the experience is just… different. Better.
If you have 7800 for everything else, get the 7800 crank. Of course either will work
