I am wanting to build a Tri specific bike. I currently ride a trek 5200. I want to get this right so Im not sure if I should build up a 650 or 700. I have inseam of 30 and im 5’8and a bit. Advantages/ disadvantges.
This has been debated here a few hundred times on this forum with no clear cut winner. In theory 650 is faster accelerating, better on climbing hills, lighter, more aerodynamic(which is immediately negated by a shorter head tube on a 700 bike). In theory the 700 is smoother riding, more stable, faster on the descents. In practical terms, you’ll never notice the difference. It’s six of one and half a dozen of the other.
IMO 650’s are for smaller people and 700’s for bigger people, but each can still ride either, it just looks not quite right. eg., ever seen a big guy on a 650 bike - looks like he’s riding a circus bike, even if he is fast. At your size, you’re in no man’s land and can ride either, so flip a coin.
The big advantage of 700 is that there is a wider selection of wheels and tires to chose from.
What cerveloguy said. You’re going to be good riding either. Take a look at what bikes fit you best and go that route. After you choose a bike that you like, your wheel size will probably be determined for you. With some brands, you may be able to choose between a frame with 650s or 700s. If that’s the case, the geometry between those frames may be a bit different so take that into consideration. Wheel size should probably be your last concern with your height.
That makes sense. I have been looking a frames. A few I like, but I noticed quite a difference in their down tube angles. For example, the Trek Equinox 11 is about 72-73 while the Litespeed Saber is 78. Now what I find strange is that the Trek is supposed to be a "Tri’ Specific frame yet it seems to have a road geometry. So what would be the advantage of that trek over my current trek 5200.
Have a look at Cervelo. They offer similiar size bikes in both 650 and 700.
