63% OT: "Riding Giants" Re-Re-Dux

On my 27th viewing of “Riding Giants” I thought to myself … Self … Jeff Clark surfed Maverick’s alone for 15 years … not that it was secret spot, just that no one would go out with him.

What would be a triathlon equivalent??? Maybe someone’s been running 20 milers on a trail no one knew about; maybe doing a weekend climb on a hill no one tried, maybe there’s a lake no one swims in beacuse there *might *be gators.

that would have to be some hill, if the chances of dying are similar to riding Mavericks.

J.

Riding Giants, eh?

The closest I come to that is my TCR.

Some of my local friends never race. One is a stud runner and cyclist who will just go out and ride 400 km. in a day on a whim.

I thought “Step Into Liquid” was better. But then I’m a “Blazing Boards” or “Tales of the Seven Seas” kind of guy.

Damn you. I have been working on an editorial for our website very similar to this theme called “Big Wednesday”

You just spilled the beans.

Fiddlesticks.

Please, don’t let ME stop you.

I know I am WAAAY behind on this but…

I have just seen Riding Giants and have to say that the footage of Laird Hamilton getting dragged out by the jetskis to those enormous waves and as for Chofu off of Tahiti! Incredible photography, you can’t believe for one second that he is coming out of that alive let alone upright!

I’ve beey DYING to see that. Where’d you find it?

See, somebody’s even further behind than you…

In the local video shop! I saw it was supposed to be pay per view in cable tonight according to the listings but not when I checked on cable so I trotted down to the store and there it was!

Hm. I don’t know if they’d have it where I am. I’m upstate NY, in NW Bumfuck. They don’t have the cool, indie movies I always wanna see, so I highly doubt they’d have something as obscure as that.

Wasn’t that an Imax movie? Was is on VHS or DVD?

DVD.

Have a look at play.com if you want to buy it.

DO you have that DVD handy? if so, can you check out the box and let me know what aspect ratio it is in?

Great flick, Laird’s wave at Teacheapu is the heaviest wave ever ridden. A side note, there is an ex professional triathlete from the early 80’s who is a regular Mavericks charger. His name is Colin Brown. He and his brother Barry were journeymen pros for a few years. Colin was in that first group to surf Mavericks when it was re-discovered after Jeff Clark. He still lives in Santa Cruz and surfs it when it is big there. I haven’t seen him in a couple decades, but I saw his name in the results of a Santa Cruz triathlon last year in the 45-49 AG. Mark Allen who surfs almost every day there in Santa Cruz, gave me the update on Colin…

I live in upstate New York (Saratoga Springs). They have a copy of the Riding Giants DVD at the local library. Plan to see it soon. Just recently borrowed “Running on the Sun” I love my local library.

Then I guess I’m quasi-upstate. It’s all relative, isn’t it? I’m in the Catskills. But, to some folks, one inch over the GWB is “Upstate”.

I’ll check the library, but I think it’s even less likely that they have it.

I absolutely LOVE the movie Riding Giants. Nothing compares to surfing IMO.

Sure thing, my fellow Campag afficienado. It says it’s aspect ratio is 1.85:1 and is anamorphic widescreen. If it’s any help to you The movie has Hindi subtitles!

I’m off to clean and polish the carbon Chorus groupset on my training bike

Teahupo’o…why do people call it cho-poo? Wouldn’t it be tay-ahh-hoo-po-oh?

Teahupo’o…why do people call it cho-poo? Wouldn’t it be tay-ahh-hoo-po-oh?

Why do people pronounce “Re-Ho-Both” “Ro-Ho-Beth?”

Why do people pronounce “Glou-Cest-er” “Gloss-ter?”

Why do people pronounce “Wor-Chest-er-Shire” “Worse-ter-sure?”

Why do people pronounce “Ur-An…” I think you get the idea.

Old joke: A haole arrives in Honolulu, circa 1950. The bellboy greets him.

Haole: Excuse me. Perhaps you can clear something up. Is it pronounced “Ha-why-ee” or Ha-Va-ee"

Bellboy: Ha-Va-ee

H: Thank you.

BB: You’re berry velcome.
