Hope this helps…
Buddy, looks like you win the Chainring war. I’m on a lame girly boy 48 tooth (on 700)

what are you running on the small ring? reason I ask is I’ve been experimenting with close ratios between large and small chain rings. no conclusions yet.
Don’t buy!!!
I have a 58, it’s all yours. I also have a small ring that goes with it, I think it’s a 46, but I’ll have to check tonight. It was on a 650 bike that I bought heap and stripped for parts. I just never thought I’d find anyone who wanted a 58. I can check rhe mfg tonight, if you want it. Just pay for shipping (under $10, I’m sure, unless you are overseas).
I’m running a 48/34 up front. It is totally awesome. In the big ring alone, my usable speed range is 60 kph (48x12…110 RPM or so) to 20 kph (48x25 ~ 80 RPM). Then I have the 34x25 if I want to go 15 kph up a steep hill at 90 RPM and still keep my HR below 130 bpm. With this combo, I have more usable range in the big ring, and I can actually do easy rides in hilly terrain without frying my legs.
Like I said in another gear, Lance’s engine is more than 10% better than mine (likely 50%), so I don’t see why I would suffer by being 10% undergeared at the high end.
I can see the value of having huge gears as a roadie for sprints, or closing gaps, but for tris, I coast as soon as I get over 60 kph. The rest helps me while running.
I’ve been messing around with 42/39 thu 55/44. Things seem to be working best at about 46/39. I live in an area with lots of “irregular hills” (climb-semiflat-climb) and having the large overlap in the cog set seems to help.
Does anyone know where you can actually buy veulta or TA Chainrings on line?
I’d love to pick up an annodized blue one (I know TA used to make them) and I wouldn’t mind having an extra tooth or two, but I can’t find them actually for sale anywhere.
I’ve been able to get my Vuelta & FSA stuff through the LBS. Fortunately we have three in the Seattle/Tacoma area that don’t have a problem doing this and one that will match published catalog prices from Performance and Nashbar.
I am stiil chasing the link for any cool store???
I still have one for the right price - free + shipping
.
ChuckieM, If you haven’t made the connection with Frogonawire and his generous offer then these are two sites I would recommend:
I’ve ordered stuff (various chainrings) through Speedy Reedy without any problems:

And I have some friends that are very happy with the service at Triumph:

The local bike shop Bike Tech in Tacoma has access to just about everything (amazing to me) but I would have to pick it up and ship it to you.
