50mm or 60mm Clinchers for Road Bike

Looking to buy my first set of carbon wheels. I am debating between Mavic’s Cosmic Carbone SL and the new Zipp Flashpoint 60’s. I haven’t ruled out Yoeleo’s U shape Chinese clinchers either. My question is whether there is a big difference between 50mm and 60mm as far as wattage gains and handling differences. These will be going on my Felt AR5, so please don’t try and pursued me into a rear disc  … thanks for the advice, Cheers.

in general 50 vs 60mm, neither a big wattage difference nor a big handling difference.

If you go with a mavic, go with the CXR 60, not the carbone.

Between the Carbone SL and Zipp Flashpoint 60, get the zipp.

CXR’s would be great but they are out of my price range. I can spend no more than $1,200 and honestly I probably wont spend over S1,000. Ghaspppp… the entire cycling community just looked down their nose at me  and simultaneously all my co-workers and family members can’t believe I’ll spend more on wheels for my bike than I did for my BMW

Steer clear of the yoelo’s if you plan to do any descending…

Mate had the yoelo’s I think in the 30mm depth,1 week old wheels, and after one descent (albeit steep 24%, and technical) the rims walls had softened and bowed out…
He was using the correct pads (as in the ones supplied), pulsing his brakes and not dragging them at all… I know cos I was right behind him…

The resin used is not fit for purpose, and clearly dangerous… the wheels are now scrap… what a waste of 500bucks… shoulda got flo 30’s (I told him too…)

Yes I told him not to get them, and not to do that route with them, and to run black prince pads… but you just can’t help some people…

58mm is best, Buy some Volk TE-37’s for the bimmer, and your friends won’t hate on your bike wheel purchase.

Highly recommend these Novermber Rail 52 carbon clinchers:

52mm, lighter than Zipp 404s, aero data on file (compared directly with the 404’s, and no they we NOT better, but honest), $1250 (at least they were).

You can read all about them and their development (chinese made of course) here:

edit for price: up to $1325 with std hubs. I think I got a set around $1100 and they still compared well to my Enves even (except for braking). They do come with Swiss Stop black prince pads.

.

How about a set of Easton EC90? You can pick them up cheap on many online sites, well within your price range, and come in near 1300g.

Get what you want for your bike. I personally like me some BBS forged rims or some Enkei’s have worked well for me also in the past. Volks are nice too but are spendy too. .

Just get some custom forged HREs so that you can double the value of an old e36 M

.

I agree with this recommendation. Buy the Novembers and don’t look back. They are good wheels.

The Wheel Gap police need to issue you a citation, also looks like headlight lense covers need to be replaced or polished.

That’s not an M

Yeah it’s not an M3… It’s a 328is with the M-Tech ground effects package you can tell by the stance and the mirrors. Dinan stage 2 software, Conforti intake, and a bunch of other useless crap  It’s the Daily Driver. '87 RX-7 turbo is the track car.

Back to the carbon!

I live in Maine I’m not lowering the car. It’s my D.D. It has stock sport suspension, and now has HD Bilstein struts. If I can get my hands on a full m3 suspension I would drop it that way, but the price has never been worthwhile for a D.D.

I see now - just looked too quick with the side skirts  Embarrassing since I’ve had 2 (e36 and e46 and e90 modded 335) but done with BMW and moved on to faster things  I did like the e36 the best though (for it’s time)

I would just get some FLO 30’s on the next order if you can wait. Aero enough, cheap, alu braking and you can use them for daily use.
I sold my Carbone SL’s last year to get some FLO 30’s.
I just can’t stand carbon braking though…

Planet X CT45 loom into view:

Well under budget, aluminium braking track, and a warranty too.

neither, something less deep then that…i would roll 30-40mm. zipp 303

I wish they made the 303s with an aluminum brake track
