50 to 100 miles in 2 weeks?

Greetings-

I’ve been steadily riding 50 miles as my weekly long ride for the past 3 months. My buddy just called me last night and wants me to do an organized century ride with him in 2 weeks.

Other than my long ride of 50 miles, I ride for an about hour to 1:15 on 4 of the other 6 days in the week.

I know I have the stamina to finish the ride, but am I going to do any long term damage to myself by increasing the mileage 100% in such a short time period?

Thanks!

RD

Just eat and drink more and you should be fine. As always when increasing miles, stay in touch with any odd pain in the knees.

As long as you don’t try to hammer the entire ride you should be fine. Your butt might be sore for a day or two but there shouldn’t be any long term problems.

Don

RD,

What bike did you end up with?

RD-

You should be fine. As everyone else has said, just make sure you have proper nutrition and allow yourself time to recover from it. What would be discouraged is riding 50 miles a week as your long ride and then jumping your regular long ride up to 100 miles every week. But for a 1 time century ride, go for it!

Keep your knees warm, use hot cream, use chamois cream, and don’t put cream in your coffee.

Be sure you eat enough during the ride. Then you’ll do fine.

i’m still undecided. i’ve borrowed a titan flex, per your (and a couple other’s) recommendation(s), but i’m hoping to ride a guru this weekend for comparison.

your titan flex post was awesome & right on the mark. i appreciate your guideance.

Man, Red Dragon is a cool user name. I should change mine to something cool like “The Jackal” or some such thing.

Keep your knees warm, use hot cream, use chamois cream, and don’t put cream in your coffee.

…AND DON’T PUT THE HOT CREAM WHERE YOU SHOULD PUT THE CHAMIOS CREAM!!

FYI - You are doing more bike training than I do before an IM race, and my bike splits are pretty decent…I think you’ll be fine. Have FUN!
